Ok, I bought an AMT.

As soon as your done laughing, please post recommendations for a good smith who can make this a reliable pistol.

No, I don't want to sell it and buy another gun. I like it...it's a Javelina 6" longslide 10mm, I got it for a song. One of my first guns was a Hardballer longslide, and 10 years ago I didn't know much about guns so when it didn't work out of the box I got PO'ed and sold it, and now I want another. I've come to realize that 1911s are like beautiful women or italian sports cars, they will make you very happy if you throw enough money at them :D

Anyway, this gun will need work, and these are my priorities, highest to lowest:

Reliability: Must go bang. Must feed, must eject. I know, your saying "its an AMT, your asking too much" but hey sue me.

Accuracy: Would like the thing to be accurate. The thing has a 6" barrel for crying out loud, it should be accurate!

Not much else really, maybe a trigger job, maybe a nice beavertail grip safety.

Any suggestions?

I have a custom 1911 from Terry Tussey. You can reach him at tusseycustom.com out of Nevada. He did excellent work on my 1911. He has many featured articles on his guns in American Handgunner magazine and many others. All you would probably want is a reliability package where he checks the bore and chamber for precise measurement, polishes the bolt face and ramp, checks the ramp angle for consistent feed, and I think he fits the extractor for good consistent extraction. After I did this I haven't had a malfunction since owning the gun. I've shot probably 2000 rds out of my gun, no problems. Before I had this done, it was very unreliable, probably malfunctioned every 150rds. with a feed jam or ejection problem.

I also got a beaver tail grip safety. He refinishes the whole gun after fitting the safety perfectly. I got Novak sights installed, front strap checkered, and back strap checkered (both are expensive). I have a stainless steel gun and it turned out gorgeous! No complaints from me. I highly recommend him. Terry will be happy to talk to you on the phone. Just tell him what you want and he will tell you what needs to be done. Really nice guy.

I hear Les Baeur (sp) does excellent work as well, but not sure how to reach him. You might want to look him up on the web.
Nothin like a custom 1911!!
