1911 Slide issue

So, I recently purchased a new Springfield 1911 in 45acp.

For the purpose of keeping the price of my competitive ammo cheap I was interested in getting a slide for it in 9mm. I was told earlier today however that it is not possible to fit a 9mm 1911 slide on a 45acp frame.

That doesn't seem to make a ton of sense to me... It seems like all the caliber specific parts are in the slide, and as I know of this should not be a problem. So am I an idiot, and I just don't know what I'm talking about? I don't have a ton of experience with the interior parts in the 1911, so its possible...

Thanks zac.

It is possible, but it takes a fair amount of work. The ejector is different, and they are hard to swap back if you want to go back to the .45 slide. Further, the feed ramps are different, and getting the 9mm to feed will usually mess up the .45. Believe me, this has been done before, and some folks have had success, but it always has turned out to be a lot more complicated than they thought it would be.

Sonnofva weasel loving turkey! Well now that I'm looking at the diagram I see what you mean...

One possible solution that was suggested to me was to get a slide with a ramped barrel. What do you think of that solution?

Thanks zac.

For the money you will spend getting a 9mm top end, plus getting it to work reliably, I think you would be better off buying a dedicated 9mm.

Here's a 9mm I built a while back, it has a ramped barrel. Ramp barrels can be the answer to feed ramps cut for the wrong caliber. However keep in mind besides all the parts I listed in your other thread on this, your frame will have to be milled for the style of ramp barrel you choose to use and you will not be able to switch the gun back to 45 without having a 45 barrel with the same style of ramp.
As another poster stated it may be cheaper to buy another gun in 9mm caliber or trade the 45 in on a 9mm.

Or get one of those Dillon thingies. About the price of a barrel and slide, but it doesn't have to be fitted to the gun.

Your other option would be to get a 38 super and replace the barrel with a 9mm barrel. The ejector and slide parts will work as is it only requires a barrel swap and 9mm mags. The 38 super mags can be used but may cause reliability issues.
