1911 Rail Gun Options

Ok, let’s get this out of the way I agree that 1911s with rails look kind of weird and historically have not personally liked them very much. However, recently I have been considering my next purchases and for some reason I keep being drawn to various rail guns.

So, for a budget of $1500 or less I’ve sort of narrowed my choices to the following:

Colt M45A1 – I guess we can still call this the “USMC Gun” although it remains to be seen how many actually get used in combat. While the dirt color isn’t necessarily my first choice I guess it does check off the “something different” box. Overall it seems like a nice gun and I’m not really looking at collector value, but I do wonder if in ten years they’ll be kind of unique.

Colt Combat Unit Rail Gun - While probably very similar to the M45A1 it does seem to have some additional features like front strap checking. One thing that makes me a little hesitant is that I already own one of the new Colt Competition guns and this is somewhat similar in appearance.

Springfield TRP with Rail – I suppose technically this may be best of my three choices, but as a long time Colt fan it doesn’t excite me quite as much as the previously mentioned contenders. However, I do own one SA 1911 and it is a great gun, so I have no doubt I would be happy with it.

So, any suggestions? What other brands/models should I look at? Should I forget the rail altogether and get a Series 70 Colt?

Why not get a Colt rail gun? If something keeps pulling you back to it then get the one you like the most. I would have to ask myself why am I looking for a rail gun and what will its purpose be?

Get the CCURG.

For one thing, it's Colt's. It wears the pony, do the others? It's the only REAL M1911 on your list. It's also the best.

Springfield TRP, in my view, is a better option than Colt. I think its a stronger gun ...with better internal parts than the Colt.

Im pretty sure the M45 Colt is over $1500, and very hard to gwt ahold of.

To me, Colt and springfield are the best mass producers of 1911s, of course a Dan wesson or ed brown, les baer etc are better guns, but they also cost more and arent built in such high numbers.

It always makes me sneer when i hear someone say "if it isnta colt, it isnt a 1911", this is just silly.

Get what tickles your fancy the most. My next 1911 will probably be a backwards step, like a springfield Mil-spec or a Colt 1991

Agreed. I've owned/own many 1911's and have yet to find a prancing pony that has really proved to be better than similarly priced competitors, often I deem them overpriced for what you get.

I don't like paying for any brand name, but that's just me.

what will its purpose be?

This would initially be a range gun. However, if it proved reliable and I proved to be accurate with it then maybe home defense. I doubt it would be a carry gun since I have other proven options.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback...
