1911 problem

What would cause a Colt Gold Cup to not be able to retract the slide by hand with hammer down?
Cock it or half-cock it, and it works just fine.
If I try to retract the slide, it first brings the hammer to half cock and then has to be yanked again from battery in order to retract.
I posted this on "The Smithy" but got no replies.
Works normally when firing.

Lavan do you know how to completely strip the frame & slide?
Oil, powder, grit etc has the remarkable way of getting into all sorts of places in a 1911 & a total tear down/clean out may be in order here.
It's quite easy to do & will unravell the mysteries of what works against what & a greater understanding of how the gun works will form in your mind.
For step by step instuctions with photos go to http://www.netaphore.com/guns/1911_ad1_us.html
Also another place to go is http://www.m1911.org/striping.htm
Hope this helps ! :)

Hi, Lavan,

What series is the Gold Cup? If it is Series 80, there may be some binding of the firing pin safety parts.
