1911 not going into battery

Recently ordered a armscor barrel for my ria fs tactical 1911. Thought it would be a drop in part as its a factory replacement and that turned out to be wrong. When assembled without recoil spring and plug, the slide sits behind the frame approx. 1/32in. The slide can be pushed into battery but requires a decent amount of force to move it rearward. Any and all advice on what could cause will be helpful as I have only a very basic understand of how 1911s work

1911/battery probleem

FLY:
Check the barrel lugs and slide recesses with some machinist's dye or a good magic marker and you might find that the problem may lie in them not meshing, affecting the 'timing' of the barrel/slide engagement. Bright areas where the bluing/marker has rubbed off by the two 'bumping' when coming together--most probably just on the edges of the lugs/recesses. It is also possible that the lugs and recesses don't have the proper spacing between them either. Remove the slide and barrel from the frame and see if they will fit together with ease, but with no fore/aft slop. If they do, then it's very possible that the problem is with the barrel link. There are different hole spacing distances to adjust for proper/correct engagement/lockup. But you probably are aware of that already.

Just something to consider.. Been there, and dealt with it with four different Gov't Models.

Good Luck.

D@MN, I miss my meds.

I put the barrel in the slide and put the bushing on to make sure everything lined up properly and there is definitely some movement of the barrel in the slide recesses.

Good enough... I used a Dremel tool with a Hard rubber bit to lightly radius the edges of both the slide and lugs. If that won't do it, then look at the barrel link for the next [shorter] spacing and try it. If it works, fine, if not, go to the next shorter spacing. Just a couple thousandths will hang you up.

Not a problem. BTW.. the best place I've found for the things like the barrel links, etc. is CDNN Sports. You'll find just about everything you'd ever need from them. I just recently ordered three fully loaded Gov't model slides from them and they all fit right in. They have extra barrels too. You might check them out, if you haven't already. You'll also find that with 1911s... All the parts are the same...They're just different. that's all. [With all due respect to YOGI (BERRA)]

Good Luck.

Log onto their site and they'll keep you updated on all the new stuff before it hits the gun mags and such.

Check barrel to bushing fit,it sounds like the barrel is binding near the crown.
If that is the case then a slight larger ID bushing will resolve the issue.

When you got the new barrel did it come with a link and link pin installed? If yes, link may be too long. If no, and you used the one on the original barrel, the link pin hole in the new barrel may be out of spec.

Quickly learning that 1911s require quite a bit of work to replace parts

They do when you are dealing with different makers of gun, and aftermarket parts, and none of them is held to the GI milspec standard, nor inspected by govt inspectors as was the case during WWII.

There are "proprietary" 1911 pattern guns from S&W, Ruger, Sig, and others, that won't take some (or any?) GI spec parts. And there are dozens of other makers of guns and parts that build to what they think are "improved" specs, some of which are drop in fits to a GI spec gun, some are not.

And when the base gun comes from someone who wasn't one of the Colt/GI makers, anything is possible.

Superfly-if you're having fun with this project then by all means, fire up the Dremel, get out the emery paper and the three cornered file and the lapping compound and go to it.

If you're getting a little frustrated and feeling a little lost then head for a gunsmith to fit the barrel for you.

The barrel came with a link pin and link so ill buy a set and try ones that are shorter. Have another barrel on standby and if this one gets to be too much ill have the other fit by a gunsmith and hopefully ill be able to learn from my mistakes

Keep at it FLY; Take it slow and be mindful of what you're doing. Keep checking for fit and function with every change you make, however slight.
You'll get the hang of it.

FLY:
CDNN has complete '11 slides for $139.00 ready to go. Bought one, installed it on the Series '80 and the Thompson AOs [.45 and 10M] and all three worked. So....I bought two more. I really didn't expect the .45 extractor to work on The 10MM, but I ran three mags through each by hand, and will load up some low-end rounds for full-function testing. Might even try the 9MM barrel in the 10 slide/frame to see what goes.

I digress. If you can, see about getting a slide or two from CDNN before they get gone. Can't beat the price. Heck, I might just get a couple more for future testing, etc.

How's it coming with your barrel/project?

WILL.

I've never heard of a true "drop in" replacement barrel for a 1911, they all need some fitting unless you get super [duper] lucky. Markers are your friend, though I'd be hesitant to dremel anything, it shouldn't really require removing that much material, just small amounts in the right places.
