1911 modification

I own a sistema 1911, I have owned it for many years and it functions quite well, but accuracy is only fair. I have been thinking about customizing the gun to improve its accuracy. Is this gun a good base to customize on, or should I save my money and invest in a different 1911?

The "Sistema" is an excellent base to use for customizing work. The only exception might be if you happened to get one that is in original excellent condition. If you have one of the "arsenal refinished", it has little collector interest or value, so have at it.

Welcome to TFL. Systimas are good solid pistols and are a good base for custom work. Now if it is a pre-'86 import in very good condition, set it aside or sell it an buy a later import. After '86 importer's had to mark them with their name, etc.

BTW come visit us at the 1911 Forum.

I just started customizing my Systema for carry. Now with a new trigger and springs it has a nice crisp pull.

KPS,

What parts did you use in your Sistema? I'm in the same boat and looking at Chip McCormack's drop in parts. Specifically the hammer, sear, and disconnector. I'm also interested in the drop in rear sight that fits the stock dovetail and works with the stock front sight.

The fair accuracy is not necessarily a bad thing for the gun's intended purpose. The were based on the original Colt design to function in the mud, crud, and blood. This was done, in part, through certain amounts of slop in the mechanism. That slop produces accuracy that is questionable for some folks, especially those of us who want a tight gun and never think we will be fighting in the mud. A Les Baer or comparable gun will likely not function under horrendously adverse conditions like your Systema is designed to do. On the really good side, depending on wear of the gun and how well it locks up, you might be able to find a good smith who can increase accuracy with a properly fitted bushing and barrel link. As Vickers noted, slop in the slide/frame fit is really inconsequential to accuracy in comparison to barrel to slide and barrel to frame fitting.
