1911 mags

I have a mil-spec 1911A1 and need some more mags. I only have 2 crummy Sprinfield factory mags. I am going to go with metalform brand - lots of good testimonials on the net. Is there any reason to buy welded base mags vs. removeable base mags. Also, is stainless worth the extra expense of $5.00 per mag? Since the metalforms will have a rounded metal follower, would stainless be likely to gall and cause problems? I generally prefer stainless, but the gun is mil-spec anyway and I think a shiney S/S mag would look kinda silly. Thanks for the info.

I'd go for the blued mags, since the stainless won't add to the reliability. I've had good luck with ShootingStar and Wilson magazines, my results with the Metalform mags has been mixed. For top quality, (and top price), the Wilsons are excellent.

I have had good luck with Wilson 8 round stainless magazines. If you do any kind of shooting where you may drop a magazine to the ground (rapid reloading in IPSC matches for example) staonless steel magazines are worthwhile. Otherwise, regular steel magazines of equal quality are fine.

I have had great results with Ed Brown 8 rnd. magazines. They have always been well made, and I never had a functionality problem with them (had a total of six at one time).

My standard advise on 1911 magazines, borrow some of every magazine being made and hie yourself to the range with a metric butt load of ammo and test them in your pistol. Buy the ones that work best in your 1911, don't buy the ones that anyone else says are best in his/her pistols.

Do what Jim says. I have a Kimber that won't tolerate Wilson's but they work in my Baer. I have some mag-packs that work in the Kimber, but the Baer doesn't like them. Try before you buy.

Well, since I don't have any 1911 shooting buddies do you think I should try for 2 Wilsons or get 3 Metalforms with round followers and removable bases. Even if the Metalforms didn't work, I would still be out less money than if the Wilsons didn't work in my gun.

What Jim said. Just to show you how contrary pistols can be, both my Kimbers (compact & ultra carry) work fine with Wilsons and the Shooting Stars that came with it. I just got a full sized Kimber and bought 3 Wilson 8 rnders for it (haven't tried them yet). Good luck with your testing. M2

If you don't have any 1911 shooting buddies, you poor soul, buy a couple of what ever mags, test them and if they work just fine, keep 'em, if not unload (no pun intended) them at a gun show.

Are there any gunshops with ranges around you? You may be able to hit a range that will let you borrow some various maker's 1911 magazines or at worse rent them to you to try. Even renting some magazines would be cheaper than buying several that just don't work.

I have had good luck with Shooting Star, Mag-Pac, USGI (back when you could be sure they were really USGI) and Randall magazines. What my pistols work well with may not be what your 1911 functions with.
