1911 in .40 S&W

Just wishful thinking on my part. I think having a 1911 in .40 would be neat. No other reason, just because. After all Llama made it in 9mm why can't Kimber, Springfield, or Colt make one in .40 ? Comments anyone?

Kimber, Colt and Springfield all have or currently do manufacture .40 1911s. Generally, these are the smaller models (i.e. Kimber Ultra Carry and Compact, Springfield Champion, Cold Defender). I know Kimber is still making them and Springfield probably is. Colt may have dropped the .40 from the caliber offerings when they "streamlined" their product line.

I've always thought a .40 1911 makes the most sense in the smaller carry pieces. If you want a full size 1911, I'd rather have the original .45 or a 10 mm (which can be modified for .40 or .357Sig simply by changing the barrel).

Companies respond to demand. If you would like to see a new product, write to the companies who make similar products and tell them what you want and would buy if it were available. (Be reasonable - Ruger is not going to make the 101 in 40mm Bofors, no matter how many letters they get.)

The Kimber .40 is a nice gun, and Buzz is correct it is compact in size. Hard to find off the shelf, I just ran into one and grabbed it. Getting answers out of Kimber is never easy if they still do produc, ect. My understanding is that they "offered" a bunch of different set-ups but put very few into production.

The little lady likes it when she's at a class and shooting 500+ rounds. She runs around the planet with a .45 but it's nice to have a choice of cal in the same system.

Want a 1911 in .40 S&W? How about a rompin' stompin' mastadon killer in the same package? Get yourself a Colt Delta Elite in 10mm Auto. They generally sell used at a discount because non reloaders don't want to pay the tariff to shoot them.

Order a .40 S&W barrel from BarSto, a 19# recoil spring from Wolff, and a couple of mags from Chip McCormick.

Now, you've got two guns. A rompin' Stompin' mastadon killer, and a defence gun that's fun to shoot, and cheap to shoot.

Being that I'm not that familiar with Kimbar I didn't know that they made a .40 in the 1911. And i've never seen one at my local gun shop. Thanks guys.

ParaOrdnance also makes some nice 1911s in .40 S&W. The high-capacity magazines may be too fat for some people with small hands (i.e., me!) but give them a looksee.

I like my Kimber Gold Match (.45 ACP) so well that I ordered a Kimber Gold Match (.40 S&W) last November. I finally cancelled it about a month ago. Although Kimber was willing to make it, they told the dealer I was ordering from that they had a such a backlog of orders for .45 ACPs (around 10,000) that the order for a .40 S&W was a low priority.

I cancelled that order and ordered a Premier II in .40 S&W from Les Baer. I have no problem with Kimber, they are just going with what is selling best. I am also glad to know that the market for high quality .45 ACP's is booming!

The Kimber .40sw is out there. My dealer has a procarry in it. The only question is why the .40 when you can have .45 in the same package (other then capacity)?

What about a glock?

Ouch, hey, watch it with the tar and feathers! Not so hard! ... :)

Griffon,
Although I am not into 1911's, or the .40 S&W, I will help as best I can.
STI International makes what appears to be a pretty stout line of 1911 style pistols in .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 9MM.
I have read some good things about them.
