1911 help

As I am new to this forum, and as a rookie I pose the following scenerio to all of my fellow gun freaks. I started shooting when I was a kid, BB guns, pellets and even paint guns. At 18 I shot my first 9mm and now at 26 I have gotten back into pistols. I started looking at 9mm Beretta 92FS, and the Glock 17/19. In doing research for a first gun I was slightly preturbed with hearing about slide failures on the Beretta's and the KaBoom factor on Glocks. (to all Beretta and Glock owners: I have nothing against either gun)At a range on day I had the pleasure of shooting a Walther P99 in 9mm. WOW is all I can say this German gun is sweeeeet!!!!!
After not being able to make a decision on my first gun I talked to a friend of the family, he was all about the .45APC. Never shooting a .45 I listened to this man rave about this, so I decide what the heck. I went out and shot a Kimber .45. WOW again!
I havent heard much about 1911's blowing up or shooters eating their 1911 slides. My question is which 1911 is best target shooting/combat pistol combo. I would love to find a Kimber with a utility frame like those on Glock were I use a light. I have feel in love with the Kimber Custom Shadow Pro, (checkered grips, night sites, 4.5 in barrel) as Tim Allen would say ARW ARWWW ARWWWWW, and would settle for that with a Surefire 6P light.
Also I live in Sacramento, were can I take some courses that teach me to use the pistol and light combo or is this just practice time at the range.
If anyone knows were I can find some good literature on improving my shooting I would really appreciate it. ( I am shooing in the 9's and X's at 5 yards; 8,9,X's at 15 yards; and at 25 yards I need some serious help, I am shooting 7's) So to all of you experienced shooter out there please help this rookie out!

I would suggest you head out to the nearest IDPA or USPSA match in your area, and see what the locals are running. These are people, especially USPSA, who shoot about 500-2,000 rounds a month. Everyone there will be more than happy to tell you why their gun is the best, based on experience, and not gun rag hype.
