1911 Grip Recommendations

I have a Springfield 9mm 1911 Loaded Target. I still have the stock grips and am thinking about getting some rubber grips for it. Can someone suggest some grips and where to get them?

Thanks

hogue. I'm not one for rubber on the 1911s but I believe hogues would be the best bang for your buck. I use hogues on all my AR15s, AKs, etc... if it has swappable grips it's wearing a hogue. my 1911 is also wearing a hogue set but it's not one of their rubber models.

I like the double diamond ones like you see on Kimbers. Would those work on a Sprinfield Loaded Target 9mm 1911

If you go with the panel type, be sure they have a sturdy backing, instead of the floppy all rubber ones.
Steel backing is best, for support and protection of one's hands, just in case.

just out of curiosity, what kindof ammo are you shooting that you need to be concerned with the magazine exploding? any KaBOOM with a 1911 would direct the explosion outward and backward from the chamber, destroying the slide and possibly blowing the mag out the bottom well before any of that energy would be directed through the frame and out the sides of the magwell into the hands. you're much more likely to take a slide to the face than shrapnel flying through the grip panels into your hands.

I disagree, tabun. Years ago I had damage to the right side grip scale of a Series 70 Gold Cup, which split cleanly top-to-bottom. I was using reloads I'd bought from a 'side line' dealer, and I believe that one I fired was a serious overload. It's possible that the brass was faulty. The slide locked up on a mangled spent case, the right scale failed and remaining rounds in the magazine were displaced crazily. One of those remaining rounds had a bulged case and a bullet that was pushed much deeper into the case. I wasn't using gloves, and my right hand smarted for a while. I've never fired another of those reloads. I bought a wraparound rubber grip set with steel panel inserts, and used that for awhile, but didn't care for it. After a time, I glued the grip scale back together and replaced it. Worked fine with commercial ammo for 6 or 7 years, until I sold it.

Based on what I've seen and read, blown case heads generally result in the mag being forcefully ejected, and cracked/splintered grip panels.
I've never heard of a slide blowing-up due to an overload (probably because there are places for the gas to vent, like down the magwell to blow out the grip panels).

I've heard a lot about the mags being forcefully ejected but I would have assumed that would give the gas a place to go, but apparently I was incorrect in my assumption. thanks for the the first hand info and I'm glad you still have fingers to type with.

I also have some VZ Operator II in dark cherry on a build. I have since considered replacing all of my grips with these G10s!

I'm not much of a 1911 guy, but I will second Shaun, and say go for the VZ grips. I think the Frag pattern or the Tactical Diamond would be ideal for a carry gun- I have 2 CZ 75s that wear the TD pattern on their grips.

G10 is the type of plastic used in pistol frames for most of the polymer wonders (glock, Ruger, springfield ETC) it's lighter than rubber, but it's not flexible. g10 makes use of fine, intricate checkering to give a solid grip, rubber doesn't need this as skin usually sticks right to it. G10 is what I went with on my 1911. it's just perfect for me, but I'm sure most others wouldn't like the texture. it's all a matter of personal preference.

Not the prettiest ones, but I really like the feel of the Hogue rubber panel grips with palm swells. Really fit my hand well.

I've got a couple of Colts with rubber wrap around grips which have a textured forestrap (no finger grooves). It feels very good. Here's one of my Colts with it:

Pachmayr makes a similar style grip.
