my dept. is considering to let us carry 1911's for a primary duty weapon.can someone help me find studies on how safe it is to carry.possibly any dept. policy for depts. that currently carry them.anything would help. we are currently trying to convince our chief to let us carry them.

The United States Army Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland might have some information. Also, try some organizations that approve it for use such as the FBI HRT, Los Angeles Police Department (SWAT and Select Uniform units), Los Angeles County Sheriffs Office (SWAT), and Texas Department of Public Safety. Numerous other organizations have the 1911 on their approved list.

I believe that what you need to do is elucidate the issue with your chief with empirical data and endorsement by other chiefs. Additionally , underscore the willingness of the rank and file to train relentlessly, even on off duty time, to become proficient with this firearm. Express willingness to seek training outside of the organization (even at personal expense) to gain proficiency.

I authorize it for my staff only if they show this alacrity and follow though.

Tacoma, WA indeed does issue Kimbers and Glocks as duty arms. They were told to find the best pistols to issue, tested 'em all and said these are the ones and the PTB said go for it.
