I'm looking at having my stainless 1911 cerakoted and was curious if the controls, safeties etc can be done in the same color or if I need to replace them with blackened pieces?
You can coat any part. Likely need re-fitting afterwards though.
You may want to rethink Cerakote for SS too. Isn't a safety issue, but it is better to colour SS with anodizing. No thick coating with that either. Just a suggestion. Caldwell Plating sells DIY anodizing kits.
Talo was cerakoting a bunch of Ruger SR1911s for a while, as I recall, a number of the small parts were done as well as the slides, while the frames were left stainless.
Generally, stainless steel is not anodized. The process doesn't work well.
Your only viable option is nitriding, if you want the coating to last.
I would leave it alone.
I sure would not paint it with Cerakote, if you want it dark there's other ways of doing it without painting your gun.
I paint my house, my barn, my tractors, but not my guns.
