1911 Carry Comp for Fiancee - Advice Sought

Hello All,

I'm entertaining the idea of having a full sized 1911 in .45 ACP built for my fiancee sporting a carry comp/compensator.

I've read one of the best was Austin Belhert's unit. Unfortunately Mr. Belhert has retired, but I remember reading his head gunsmith now runs his own shop, but I can't remember his name.

Does anyone remember Austin Belhert's head pistolsmith's name?

Any opinions on his work?

Any other gunsmiths' carry comps that anyone has opinions on? Good? Bad?

All input is welcome.

Thank you.

Anthony,

How about the idea of building her a Commander-length 1911 with a carry comp around .75" that will make it the same length as a Govt.Model?

I've got one and it's real easy to find holsters, etc.

Good luck,

I think many if not most of the folks here will advise against a compensator on a carry gun, particularly for someone who isn't a highly experienced shooter. Comps are fine for matches, but the diversion of gas into a shooter's face, hands, or clothing can be a serious detriment in a personal defense situation, and as we all know, you don't always get to choose your stance when you're attacked.

Get the full-size without a comp. It's served an awful lot of people quite well.

Another option is to use a hybrid comp, which adds no length to the pistol. I'm inclined to agree that the downsides of a comp on a defensive gun probably outweigh the advantages for an inexperienced shooter. Even for an experienced shooter it may not be advantageous. If she's recoil sensitive, couldn't you get a 1911 in 9mm?
