There are both books and videos available on gunsmithing the 1911 type. There are other books by the ton. For what you want, Jerry Kuhnhausen's 2 volumes on the .45 auto should be a great place to start. See www.gunbooks.com or write Heritage Gun Books, VSP Publications, P.O. Drawer 887, McCall Idaho, 83638 1-888-634-4104. Cost is about $55 for both, plus S&H.
GreenDragon, there are a couple that I'll add to what Jim said. Hallocks .45 Auto Handbook and Pistolsmithing by George C. Nonte. Both are very good and available from Brownells. www.brownells.com. George
I would recomend The Tactical 1911 by Dave Lauck at http://www.dlsports.com/ The book covers everything from pistol selection to building a custom .45. I got the book and as you can tell love it. Nope I do not have a 1911 yet, but I know what I do want after reading this book.
