1911 Barrel fitting question

I build 1911 pistols in my spare time. They seem to work very well. Im not really a gunsmith nor do i pretend to be.

On my latest project, i noticed that the barrel hood makes contact with the breech face. There is absolutely no gap and they touch.

I understand that firing this gun would either crack the barrel in the chamber area or crack the slide around the firing pin hole or extractor area due to the constant metal on metal bashing.

Is trimming the barrel hood the only or cheapest remedy?

Jerry Kuhnhausen, in The Colt .45 Automatic describes fitting the hood to the slide, not the slide to the hood. His hood photo and caption describe fitting the hood to a slight drag contact, then relieving the corners. It is made clear that the aftermarket match barrel will have an over sized hood that will require fitting. So, yes, contact is OK. The hood should not, however, interfere with complete and correct lockup.

I recommend the books, though I really wish they were more thoroughly indexed.

Barrel fitting

I milled the hood to get a Springfield barrel to fit on my Gold Cup and used the Kuhnhausen book as a reference as well. Works like a charm. No breach face work and no contact either.

The Kuhnhausen books are outstanding and required reading as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck

Careful there young fellow. Building 1911's, not being a gunsmith. Do you have a FFL manufacturing license? I only ask because "YOU" stated "YOU" build 1911's (plural) in your spare time or are they "ALL" for personal use?
