1911 .45 (the patriot's choice?)

The older I get and the more of a patriotic, freedom-loving-American I get, the more I want to carry a 1911 as a symbol of my heritage.

Is there anyone else out there like this? Is this silly?

It just almost seems right to carry the gun that is the epitomy of America, carrying the very American 1911 .45. Both of which (1911 and .45) totally symbolize our American heritage and American self defense and independence for 100 years now.

It seems almost like a religious totem.

I like my Glock, but I am thinking of putting the money into getting one of my 1911's reliable etc so that I can carry it for defense, for the simple reason that it just seems right.

I have come to feel that carrying a gun is more than just about defense, but it is a symbol of freedom and my symbol that I am a citizen rather than a subject.
The more my gun becomes a symbol of my freedom over just a self defense tool, the more it just seems right to carry the most American gun in existence: the 1911 .45.

Have I lost my mind, or have I seen the light?

Cass, I don't know if you've seen the light or not, but I definitely do not think you've lost your mind. In fact, I like the way you think. Short of a musket, which would not be the preferred choice for self defense, I can think of nothing that would symbolize Americana more than the 1911 .45ACP.

BTW, where have you been lately? :)

I feel the same way. That is why I bought a Kimber Kompact. As soon as I shake it down and buy some leather for it, I intend to retire my Glock 19 as my CCW weapon.
My entire battery of working guns is slated for renovation. I am considering selling my AR15 to finance a tactical .308 rifle project. I guess my tastes are maturing...or uh whatever.
Son, you would never guess what handgun I carried in the Army (psst...a Ruger .357 magnum).

Hmmm, being honorably retired from our nation's armed forces, the 1911 is not what I would choose.

I'd have to vote for the S&W K frame revolver myself. Absolutely nothing is more typically American that that! :D

Of course, that company is currently on my fecal list :p so I don't recommend a new one...

Who said young people aren't supposed to like 1911s? I'm 17 and would never pick tupperware over a 1911 :D

Until reading the thread I considered the 1911, as issued by U.S gvt to be the symbolic handgun of the American Warrior.

Looking back, I lost the picture of the 1911.

I started traveling with the Army bout 39, enlisted Navy 55, retired Navy 72. Did a little contract work after that. Looking back at snippets of those years I see a mixture of sidearms.

Yes I see a lot of 1911A1s. But I also see a lot of Colt and S+W wheelguns that were issue items. I also see a lot of K frames and a few grease guns. In my three on/behind line tours ( 40 months ) where I WORE a sidearm for more than decoration I see mostly K frames. The third tour ( 6 months 66/67 ) I wore 1911 and a J frame. My number 2 Wore Blackhawk .357 and J frame, the other eight wore K frames except one who wore issue 1911 in ankle holster. I say WORE cause often the sidearms were a part of us for 24 per day. Bathing was not as often as desired.

I do not consider the issue 1911/A1 to be a personal defense weapon. It is stone reliable using issue 230gr ball ammo and with the issue looseness of slide and lockup. The clones I have seen in matches also seem picky about the ammunition. Even Glocks appear to be picky about bullet, load and crimp.

I have shot and shoot a lot alongside of a SIG P220. That one impresses me. This SIG has good trigger, excellent accuracy and feeds all .45 ammo including full wadcutters. Functions all the time with any bullet shape or weight and soft to nasty loads.

Cass, thank you for starting the memory lane bit, palms are sweaty now but it was a good trip.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

CassandraComplex you sir are a good man. You have not lost your mind. But your theory would make me a lot older than my birth certificate would say. I have wanted a 1911 for since I was about 15. And brought me one for my 21st birthday last year. Now if I could get a CCW in California (ha.. yeah that's gonna happen) I could carry it.

As for 18 year old girls falling in love with the 1911, I had 2 18 year old girls fall in love with my AR-15. They also fell in love with my friends S&W 686 6" after only putting 1 round through it. So I don't think young women falling in love with 1911 is that odd.

There's something very alluring to teenag girls about large bore handguns. I shoot with several fathers, and every time they bring their daughters, I tell their dad that their daughters are welcome to shoot my .44 Mag. You should see their eyes light up when they touch one off! I don't offer the Casull, since I don't want them to get hurt, but the .44 Mag does the job. Immediately after shooting a cylinder, they'll look at dad with those beautiful eyes and say, "Dad, I want one!" I'll never let my daughter (if I have one) shoot a .44 Mag 'cause it'll be her first love...hey, maybe that's better than a scuzzy boyfriend!

Cassandra, Gunslinger: I don't know why I am so fond with this gun .45 1911, I am not an American but it reminds me also how this pistol developed and how it was used in my country and serve your forces.

There are only two things that keeps me bought it and loyal to this model.

1. It stopped a Moro "Huramentado" "Suicide Moro" which your former .38 cannot do it.

2. It surpassess all wars (WWI and WWII) that it can be at par with any rifle in self defense in real fight.

Up to now it is the weapon I am carrying in the city and in the province if I am going home. I feel secured from a .45 caliber

That is only my own feeling, I might be obsessed with it or whatever but I prefer it than any caliber as carry weapon.

Thanks
