1911 .45 Carbine Conversion Unit

Greetings,

Over the weekend, I went to the range and met a guy who had one of these:

He let me shoot a magazine through it and man what a kick! I liked it so much I ordered one today. Cost around $300. The unit mounts on your 1911 grip frame and uses the trigger/hammer to fire. The full name of it is the Mech-Tech 1911 Carbine Conversion Unit. Get this: It is not a firearm. They will send one right to your house, in the mail!!!

Get one quick before Diane Fiendstein finds out. I will give a full report after delivery, but the one I fired was smooth and sweet, with a Trijicon holo sight on it.

Regards,

Ledbetter

I've had one for almost a year now. I absolutely LOVE mine. I had a Kimber Polymer that was a REAL dog. I could never get it to fire more than 6 rounds without jamming. Well, I put it under the Mech Tech and it has not miss a single round since.

Minor details. The unit is fairly accurate out of the box. However, I had the barrel locked down, sling swivels installed and had it throated and pollished. Now it will shoot thumbnail sized groups at 50 yards. I know of one unit that has had over 1500 rounds run through it without cleaning and it is STILL going strong. I found the increased velocity of mine can cause leading with upper limit lead cast bullets. However, I fired about 25 rounds of hard ball through it and the groups settled back down. I just make it a practice to shoot nothing but hardball in mine now. Not a requirement, just a personal preference.

Another buddy shot a deer with his this past year. 185 grn CORBON - 9 inches of penetration and the deer dropped in its tracks.

FYI - for thouse of you who were at IDPA Nationals last week... I shot the mover (Stage 11) with mine after hours. WAY COOL!!! :D :D :D 12:28 hehehehe No reload required with the 14 round mag.

Okay, I'm in just as soon as the iron sights are available. 1 each Glock 17, 1 each M1911. To go.

Ooops. No 9mm Glock yet. Soon I hope.

Kodiac has looked at these...
Kodiac approves.
Kodiac would put a Holosight or a Optima on it.
Kodiac would be a happy bear with this.

I got to see two of these (at a nameless shoot) in August. One was owned by Sensop and was chambered in .45 ACP. The other belonged to pack_rat and was chambered in .450 Roland. Both were beautiful and performed flawlessly.
Dillions also list them in their catalog at an asking price of $315. Immediately after seeing the two at the range my (extensive) wish list grew. :)

I got to shoot about 300 rounds in my friends yesterday. GREAT little conversion but a bit heavy. We put a Tacso PDP3 on it and out at 50 yards we got about 2" group with my reloads and several factory loads (worst was 4" with PMC FMJ). Also, with longer barrel the velocity was about 100 fps faster than my 5" Kimber. It was totally reliable with all ammo and very accurate. One minor thing I didn't like was that after each shot the stock vibrated like a tuning fork. I'll be looking for one at next gun show and I would get one for my Beretta too when it comes out.

I shot one of these critters a year ago. Still waiting for one to show up in my stocking. After two shots to get it on, I put the rest of a clip into a whole the size of a nickle at 15 yrds. I really, really, want one.

No Rugers or HKs.. there is a "block" that will fit the Para for some ramped barrel models. Right now, it is pretty much 1911 frames only. From their web site:

quote:
Not available yet - but coming - are CCU's for Glock, Beretta, Hi Power !
Note: .1911 frames in 45 will work with 10mm and 40S&W CCU's, conversely 10mm and 40S&W frames will work with 45 CCU's. Also available is an insert block to allow use of CCU's with Para Ordnance and other frames cut for 'ramped' barrels. Also available without the muzzle extension upon request.

Greetings,

I had a chance to run 200 rounds through this yesterday and clean it afterwards, so I thought I'd share the experience.

First, Ed, the CCU wil fit any 1911 or clone frame, double stack para-ordinance included I would think. I mounted it on a Commander frame. Compact (Officers' model) sized frames work too.

The tuning fork "THUNG" is not completely alleviated by the nylon cover, but the stock could be easily damped with a couple of heavy rubber inserts to eliminate the resonance.

The CCU came in the mail from Concealco two days after my phone order. The unit is mostly aluminum, inside a thin black powdercoated steel housing. The fit and finish are very good. Interestingly, the manufacturer recommends that the CCU not be dissassembled for cleaning. Not even the bolt comes out. Innards are pretty accessible, though.

Be advised that JMB did not design or build this accessory, and it does not look like it will last as long as a 1911 (which, admittedly, is forever). The slide rail fitting surfaces do not provide full support, and, IMO, the heavy carbine should NOT be picked up by the pistol grip. The barrel is beautiful, however. It's made of heavy stainless steel and fitted precisely to the aluminum receiver.

The CCU is operated by blowback action. The bolt is of nicely machined steel and resembles the underside of a 70 series 1911 slide. There is no impact to the grip frame when using the gun EXCEPT that the frame recoil is transmitted through the slide stop pin, and the hammer is cocked by the impact of the bolt. Use of the shoulder stock, of course, minimizes the slide stop impact. The frame's manual and grip safeties are operational. Some extended or ambi safeties will not fit.

The accuracy is as good as reported by other users. The gun could shoot better than me, that's for sure. With the front of the gun rested, I was easily able to easily and consistently hit a 6 inch metal target at fifty yards with a Tasco 2x pistol scope (the 4.35 MOA Trijicon Reflex II ACOG I ordered from Dillon hasn't arrived yet). I was using Georgia Arms copperplated lead semiwadcutter ammo. At twentyfive yards with the front rested I was able to shoot eight rounds of PMC FMJ all touching in a group something like this:

....
....

Cleaning was pretty easy considering that nothing comes apart. I hope the firing pin, extractor and recoil spring all last forever, or the unit has to go back to the factory. Patience , solvent, and Qtips are required for cleaning. However, the black fitting on the end of the barrel makes it impossible to thouroughly clean the crown. I may have the fitting removed permanently (it is not designed to be removable), as its utility is unclear. There are holes in the sides only, not in the top or bottom.

For the price, a remarkable addition to the capabilities of your pistol.

Ledbetter
