1911 15-rd mag uses

In part of a trade, I received a 15-rd single-stack mag for my 1911. It's twice as long as the standard capacity mag, and sticks below the grip at least the height of another mag.

What, pray tell, is the use of this akward contraption?
 
I once saw a 30 round mag for the standard 1911 .45... :eek: I swear, it could almost have been used as a monopod to shoot from!!! I think they had about $195 price tag on it.
 
If you shoot in any Leagues or matches that are Comstock (where you can shoot as many rounds as needed) and are unlimited on load size this 15rd mag would be extremely useful!
 
This mag won't be legal for USPSA. Max length is 170mm. In a single stack gun, this would limit you to 10 rounds.
 
I've heard stories of World War I observers in otherwise unarmed observation planes carrying 1911's with oversize magazines.
I believe some of them held up to 40 rounds.

The stories I heard said that the observers from opposing sides used to simply wave at each other during the early days of the war but when things started heating up, they began to shoot at each other with pistols hence the oversize magazines.

Don't know if the stories are true or not.
 
True - but I don't know of the oversized mags. When they wanted more fire power the pilots took up rifles and then machineguns and the rest is Fighter History.

...they are twice as handy at the range. The key is finding a 10- or 15-rounder that feeds consistently. Anything longer [and heavier] than that just screws up your muscle memory, IMO.
