James thank you
She's not perfect, but I won't look as good at 108
She was given to me by my dad last week and am very proud to have her in my collection now.

Nice looking Smith

Congratulations on the new S&W. And a gift from your Dad. It does not get any better than that. The 1905 is a very nice sized gun and handles easily.
I have a close cousin to it. Mine is a 1905 4th change that shipped early in 1946 right after the end of WWII. I found a correctly marked gold box with paperwork for it. It makes a very nice package to show off to friends and family.
Enjoy the 1905. Thanks for sharing it with us. JA
PS. Nice looking grips!

Thanks for all the comments
I have a presentation case my father handmade me 28 years ago that once held a 38/44HD (yes I said once..) that I think this one will rest in.
I hadn't had anything worthy of that box until now
And yes, the grips are dang near perfect, my father keeps all his handguns in oiled socks..lol it worked well obviously
:0)

In .32-20, that serial number makes it a 4th Change gun and we lose the ability to narrow down the born-on date as the index in the big book simply says that 65701 thru 144684 serial numbers (.32-20) were produced from 1915 to 1940.

We could work the math a little and guess, but all we'd have is a guess.
My guess would be at or around 1930?

Roy Jinks knows! :D
Best way to come CLOSE to finding out without ordering the factory letter would be to google until your fingers fall off, all with the pure purpose of finding OTHER folks who have a .32-20 Hand Ejector with a similar or close serial number who HAVE gotten the factory letter... to see when their revolver was built. Gunbroker and Guns America can be a help here, with folks offering guns for sale, if they mention they have a factory letter and better still, show a picture of the letter.

Nice revolver!

IIRC the .32-20s had their own serial number range, didn't they?

I've got one, but it's been a long time since I read up on it.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the .32-20s used the mushroomhead ejector rod until the end of their run, so that's not a great indicator of age on this one.

Thank you both, I've come to realize that the 32-20s SN range is a whole mother animal from the 38 spcls
I will get her lettered, it would be a great thing to have.
And Mike, the SN I took from the bottom of the grip frame

OK, good.

A lot of times people who are unfamiliar with S&Ws will open the cylinder and find the assembly floor number and assume that's the serial number.

I'm probably heading home early today, so I'll drag mine out of the safe and see what number it wears.

I wish mine were in the same kind of shape. While it's good and tight mechanically, the finish on mine has gone brown and begun to flake.

OH MY GOD!!!!!

You got the ultra-rare yellow 5-point star production!

None exist and all versions were haunted by the 3rd ex-wife of Horace Smith!:D:eek:

Sorry for that clowning... :p

My two old .38 HE M&P 4th's show serial number on bottom of butt, underside/bottom of barrel flat right above where ejector rod sits and also on the rear/breech-end of the cylinder where you load cartridges. All three numbers should match.

On a later production .32-20? I have no idea.
