1903A3 rear sight problems

This weekend I pulled my Smith-Corona out of the safe. I was shooting at 200 yds and about every 3rd shot was hitting about a foot low. The reason was that the rear sight was slipping due to the recoil. The tiny little screw that holds the peep in place is tight, but there is not enough pressure on the serrations to hold it in place. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks.

You can try removing the screw and spring, then bend the spring slightly into a shallow inverted "u" so the screw puts more tension on the spring. Be careful not to lose the small parts and not to break the spring.

Thanks Jim. I tried that and it did tighten it up a bit. Once I removed the spring I could see that the little tabs on the spring were very worn, almost smooth. Looks like a replacement spring will be needed to take care of the problem.

Not one of the great design ideas of the world, but I guess in the middle of a war they used what was quick to make and worked.

Any idea where these springs are available? I think my Smith-Corona A3 has the same problem as hodaka's. I've just been checking the sight between shots, but if there's a real fix ...

Regards.
