Handed down a sporterized 1903 springfield. Had cracked stock and missing front sight. Replaced stock and bedded. Sweated on front ramp. Shoots good groups but 6" high at 50 yds, rear sight bottomed out. How much higher do I need to go with bead to get on target?

Well 50 yards is too close, try 100 or farther. Does your front sight have interchangeable blades? if not you will have to file it down, or replace it with one that does. I would suggest if this is a hunting rifle you may want it to have a 2-300 yard zero, as a 30/06 has plenty of long range power. Shoot safe.

Sight is changable. Was wondering if there were any equasions to figure out how much higher to go? Thanks for the replies!

sight adj. equation

X/distance between sights as distance above or below point of aim of bullet impact/is to distance to target [in inches]. X = amount sight must be adjusted for pt. of impact correction.

6" / 150' = needed adjustment / sight radius
Soooooo, assuming your rifle has an 18" sight radius, the additional height required is .027". Try getting a .030" or so taller front sight so you have some wiggle room. That's a black hair, BTW.
