Ok so I have a question for a gunsmith here. I have several 1903's all of which are the later models. One is becoming a 35 whelen, and I was want to do one up in 240 weatherby mag. My question is...Will the 1903 action hold the pressure of a 240 Weatherby Magnum? Also what are some other good calibers for a 1903?

Yes.

Sir:
Both of your Springfields will take the pressures. Be sure to give your actions the standard checks - also be careful removing barrels!

dear sir:

Sir:
The Springfields when doing the "inspection arms" the bolt was slammed back against the bolt stop which impacted on the left locking lug - be sure to check it and be sure it"s not indented! If it is get a new bolt - are you sure these are "high number" guns? Be sure.
When removing the bbls. turn (or saw) a groove near the junction of the bbl. and reciever to avoid strain when removing the bbl. to avoid straining the reciever - particularly with the Enfiels.

The 240 Weatherby uses the same bolt face as the 30-06. It is rated for 58000 psi. The 240 Weatherby is basically a 6mm-06 with a belt swaged into it for looks and marketing. Yes, it is a fantastic varminting round, but barrels only last about 2000-3000 rounds. If you don't want to pay more for Norma brass or Weatherby brass, have the rifle chambered in 6mm-06. You will have the same thing.

"Sporterizing" and "converting" M1903s-you're making us collectors cry. I doubt you are going to use 60 year old barrels, why use 60 year old actions?
Just my $.02.

I would not cut up an as issued GI and would hope bmx isn't doing that. I figure there are enough pre-Bubbaed old army surplus rifles around to keep another generation entertained, though.

I customize a 1903 to 6mm-06 4 months ago, first I was thinking of the weatherby option but there is plenty of 06 brass available so just decided for the 6-06. Its a hell of a caliber for long range shots from coyotes to deer.

Basically what i have is several 1903 barreld recievers. It is not a collectors gun. Trust me. I have an unissued M1D sitting in its own case. Also have a matching numbers springfield 1903. The "60-year old action" is a proven one. The winchester model 70 action is based off of the 1903. So it cant be all that bad. I have plenty of 240 weatherby brass to keep me going too.
