I went by my favorite pawn shop at lunch the other day and found a 20 inch 1897 riot gun in 12 ga. it is original and is in great shape. The bore was dusty but cleaned up and is miror like now. It shows to be manufactured in 1903. Also it is stamped "Committee Public Safety" on the left side of the receiver. Have not had much luck finding any information on the history of the markings. I have owned other 1897's but this one is cleaner and tighter than any I have found. I walked out with it in hand for $300.00. It will be passed on when I am passed on. Thanks for any information.

Good score. Fine old 97s are not only valuable, they are good shooters.

I do urge you to have a good smith go over it for stuff like chamber length, headspace, etc. At 108 years, a checkup is in order.

Enjoy....

I am aware of a Committee of Public Safety, in Tucson, AZ that still operated in the early 1900's though more a ceremonial role that an active fighting role. During the 1880's it was the revenge force that punished the Apache for raids in that part of the world.

I like 97's good luck with it.

Good Luck & Stay Safe

Thanks Bob. That is a start. This gun must have been in a closet for decades and not shot. The original finish is worn but not gone and the normal rust speckling on the receiver but most of that came off with a little Flitz and some elbow grease. This one is a jewel. I had a 30 inch shooter in the 70's that was a duck and goose killing machine. Don't even remember what I traded it for. Won't be trading this one.
