make certain that pulling the slide back there is resistance and none when pushing forward into battery.
With the hammer eared back to full-cock, the slide SHOULD NOT function, if does then the slide lock is broke and needs replacing.
When full-cock, the left-side button is depressed, THEN the slide should function.
If a take-down, then break apart and inspect the end of the slide, there should be a well-define trapezodial shape to the lug on the end. This slides in the groove of the carrier raisning & lowering, if rounded then slide needs to be replace or "Made NEW" (Expensive).
