1895 re-bbl?

An acquaintence of mine owns a Browning 1895 carbine in .30-40 Krag. He wants to rechamber it in .405 Win. and I'm not sure it will work out. As I understand it, the bbl's on these guns are pressed in right? I am sure a .405 Win. bbl will have a much greater diameter than that of a 30-40 Krag, thus meaning you would not be able to put the larger diameter bbl in the smaller .30-40 receiver? He wants to use the bbl out of a Winchester 1895 in .405 Win. and wants to know if this will work. Could the Browning receiver be modified to accept the Winchester bbl? I have very little expertise in lever actions, even less with Browning, and I don't know how to answer him. Will he have to change the bolt too? Will this even work? I suggested just buying a Winchester already chambered for it and he said he liked the way Brownings shoot better. Anybody have experience/knowledge with/of this type of thing? thanx for any help

Barrels are not pressed in, they are screwed in like most other quality rifles'.

Modern 1895 Winchesters are made by Miroku in Japan, same as the earlier Browning trademark guns. I think they have some mechanical differences in the lockwork to satisfy the safety lawyers but most likely the barrels are the same. The casehead diameter of a .405 is the same as .30-40 so the bolt is the same.

The .30-40 barrel can be rebored or replaced. I don't know if Winchester/Browning (all owned by the Froggies and built by the Japs these days) will sell you a barrel.

Z-Hat does such work, Dave Scovill plugs them regularly in Rifle Magazine. Your friend could call them so you did not have to guess about it.

Ah, thank you much. I will let him know. Thanx for setting me straight about the pressed in barrels. As I said, very little experience with lever actions. I'm not sure where I picked it up that they were pressed in...
