1895 Nagant Revolvers?

I was just visiting Empire Arms and I noticed a 1895 Nagant revolver that is chambered for 7.62x39R Nagant loads. I know this is a truly stupid question, but I was wondering if............I'm afraid to ask.......this round is remotely related to the the 7.62x39R AK47 round. Please don't beat me.

Nope, not related. Also, the 7.62x39 does not have the R extension on it. The R extension means "rimmed." The larger 7.62x54R is a rimmed case.

Oddly enough, there are conversion cylinders out there to let these revolvers shoot .32 ACP rounds with the use of moon clips. Actual 7.62 Nagant (pronounced like "agent") ammo is expensive and hard to find.

The actual round has the bullet seated down in the neck so that as the cylinder moves forward (which it does in this design) it can form a tight gas seal. A most unique gun!

I've been looking at the Nagant revolver for a couple of years, and I'm finally about to buy one. They are really interesting, but not very good! I want one for my collection, but I doubt I'll shoot it much. The ammo is super expensive and it has a TERRIBLE trigger. But I still want one. It is such a unique gun!

Hi, Hammy and Chad,

The Nagant revolver round could be called the 7.62 x 39R, although I have never seen it referred to that way. It is not the same as the 7.62 x 39 rifle cartridge for the SKS and AK. The cartridge case of the 7.62 Nagant is so long because it contains the bullet and has enough extra length to insert the case mouth into the end of the barrel, thus sealing the barrel-cylinder gap.

The .32 ACP cylinders, needless to say, do not provide this sealing.

Chad,
The .32 ACP does not need a moon clip in those new cylinders because it is semi-rimmed. A clip would not aid extraction, since the Nagant is a solid frame with a rod ejector.

A few years ago some company was selling replacement cylinders chambered for 7.62 x 25mm (>30 Mauser) THat got the 1895 up off its knees!

I believe the 1895 Nagant revolver can be ordered by a dealer with an FFL from Century Arms. Cost should be about $75 for a gun that was reblued in one of two arsenals in Russia. Gun comes with holster. Ammo is 7.62 Nagant which can be ordered from Fiochi.
Sincerely, Twoinchgroup52. PS-- This gun is unique. It is the only "gas seal" revolver ever produced.

twoinchgroup: I believe the Nagant revolver was a copy of an older French design. The cylinder also shifted forward to form a gas-seal (sorry, I can't remember the name of the revolver).

And I don't think I'd fire 7.62x25 in a Nagant revolver, whatever the replacement cylinder says - you're talking two different animals, there. The purpose of the gas seal was to conserve power for the anemic 7.62 Nagant round. I don't think the 7.62x25 round could be called anemic, since it has a muzzle velocity of around 1600 fps! I'd put that idea up there with firing a .357 round through a .38 revolver - you might get lucky and get away with it, then again, you might not....

Beginner barbarians probably had the idea that every house they broke into would be full of untouched loot and frightened, unarmed victims. It just doesn't work that way, my friend.

I hope these evil men come to understand our peaceful ways soon - My trigger finger is blistering!
