I recently purchased an 1895 Chileno Mauser, cal. 5 x 57, from Gander Mountain. It is in original condition and in pretty good shape. It is packed with Cosmoline and I am looking forward to cleaning it, but I cannot figure out how to get the barrel bands off. Can anyone help?

Dunno how well I can explain this but there should be a piece of metal (spring) that goes under the band at a 90 degree angle.. I believe you can push it down enough so that the band will slide off. It has a hook like on it that has to be pushed down to clear it to allow the band to pass over the hook. Probably have to use some solvent to emove any dried cosmoline that might be sticking things together.

In addition to the spring retainers, 1895 Mausers have a screw that acts as a pivot for the sling swivel and holds the clamp tight. You may need to loosen it a bit to get the bands off. Other than that, just push the bands off the front of the barrel.
