I have an 1894 Winchester origonal year model that I would like to restore to firing condition. I know the lever is in poor condition and so is the trigger housing unit. Any idea on how much this would cost me? Or would it be best to get another one?

sell it to me

I got a older Marlin lever action if you want to get rid of it.....LOL just kidding

You can take it to several different folks and get the gun to running correctly and then you can find someone to make it right again looks wise or you can attempt it yourself.

If you know what you are doing, you could most liley make the repair yourself, for that, you could get this DVD from AGI and even if you don't feel like making the repair, you will know more about the gun and how to maintain it:

Of course a good repair job done by a smith is going to cost you about what the video does as far as labor is concerned, but if you like doing for yourself, the video is the way to go.

Most parts for those guns are still available, but if it is in that bad a shape, it might not be worth trying to restore it. If those parts are worn or broken, what does the rest of the gun look like? I suspect that gun, like a lot of western guns, was "rode hard and put away wet", so the barrel is shot, the bluing is a memory, the stock has no finish left and maybe is cracked to boot, and so on.

Besides, even in poor condition, the gun has some collector value. With new parts it loses even that value.

I think I would retire the old gun and buy a newer one. While top condition pre-64 94's are getting pricey, good, usable ones are still available at reasonable prices.

Mr. Keenan:
I have been wondering just for fun, what a top condition pre-64 Model 94 goes for nowdays. When you say pricey, can you give an idea about what they are going for?

I have one from 1956. I am not selling, I just am curious.

Just a plain 94, vintage 1940-1964, NIB, will run at least $600. A pre-1929 NIB will run well over $2000, with 40% for pre-1898. Prices go down from there, depending on condition.

Of course, other features, like a saddle ring, a takedown model, short barrel (factory only), or odd calibers, will add to the value.

they are out there

I just recently picked up a first year model model 94 so they are still out there and this one is in very good condition. If you want to fix it, it most likley can be repaired and you can choose to have it done or do it yourself.

You can leave it as is or you can have it restored, that is again up to you. If it is in decent shape except for the workings, I suggest having it repaired, nothing worse than trying to sell one that isn't completely functioning or have one just be a wall hanger.
