I just purchased a 1890 Ser# 44890. It is a 22 short but the magizine opening is sized for 22 long.. Is this typical?

Early 1890s had a triangluar feed slot opening, later ones had a dartridge shaped feed slot for the magazine. AFAIK, they were all the same.

Then the tube's cartridge opening would need to be long enough for the .22 W.R.F. cartridge which is 1.160"
Vs the long rifle at under 1 inch and about .025" diameter difference.
The outside diameter of the magazine tube on my 1890 .22 W.R.F. is 0.434"
My rifle dates to 1912 #4563XX Yours dates to 1897.
