1885 High Wall question

I'm wondering if anyone here knows anything about the quality between the current 1885 High Walls made by Winchester, Uberti and Pedersoli. If you were to buy one, which manufacturer would you choose and why? Thanks.

I would get one of the Winchester "Creedmoor" guns.Very good barrels, then Uberti. The Italian guns tend to have alot "freebore".

FWIW, Winchester hasn't made new Model 1885's in many, many years.

What's on the market as "Winchester's" are rifles made for Winchester by Miroku Gun Co, Japan - which has evolved into a highly-rated gunmaker, capable of excellent craftsmanship, fit, & finish.

.

Browning doesn't make guns , never did ! My Browning 1885 about 12 years old was made by Miroku couldn't be better quality . I've heard that the latest version is also made by Miroku . :)

While the Brownings are nice..If you want a truly American re-make of the 1885, check out Ballard Rifle LLC. www.ballardrfiles.com They offer just about every option Win. did..and some they didn't! Very high quality American product.

Yup.
Recent production Browning and Winchester trademarked "highwalls" are cosmetic simulations made by Miroku in Japan. They are fine quality but they are not close copies of Mr Browning's and Winchester Repeating Arms' originals. Externally they kind of resemble an original until you notice that the receiver side flats are recessed at the front but not at the rear. Internally there is hardly any connection except in the elementary sense of being a falling block single shot.

They are the same gun except for trademark, since FN owns both brands and just decided to go by the name of the main manufacturer instead of the designer. (The Browning brothers made something like 600 rifles before Winchester bought the rights.)

Not to run them down, I have the BPCR and it is a great shooter.

The Uberti is a fairly close copy of a real Winchester. Their lawyers don't trust you with a gun that cocks itself so they have a hammer linkage like the Winder Musket meant for young boys in miltary schools that only brings the hammer to half cock. One of the guys in the BPCR club shoots one and does ok.

The Pedersoli Highwall is a Pedersoli barrel and set trigger in a Uberti action. Looks like they make the stock, too, but I can't be sure. Price is so high you had just about as well buy a Browning/Winchester/Miroku or a C. Sharps 1885.

Mine also was made in Japan. It is in .22-250 and is very accurate. The walnut furniture is beautiful as is the fit and finish of the receiver and barrel.

I have a Browning (or who ever the hell made it) in 45-70. It's excellent quality, great shooter, I have no complaints about it at all.

I'd kind of like to have one in 270. I think it would make a great primary hunting rifle. (excepty my Mode 70s would probably bite me if I left them home).

My brother bought a special order Pedersoli in a 45-70, 36" octagon barrel, double set triggers, and tang sights with a flip front sight. He's had to send the gun back now 4 times. Next month will be a year that the rifle has been back in their shop attempting to fix it. The problem, you can't always open it even when it's not loaded. When it does this "trick", it does not set the trigger up either. It also won't reliably set a round off. Real light firing pin strikes that you'd think would be an easy fix.
