No guess on value but I would bet the "U.S.S." is probably "United States Soldier". Interesting piece, where did you find it?

Your guess of United States Scouts is correct. It was the insignia of US Army Indian Scouts and now adopted as branch insignia for Special Forces.

That's a really nice rifle and bead work. I'm sure if it could talk the stories would be fascinating.
If everything is original, the beadwork itself is worth a lot as original native art. If the rifle could be shown have been used in a campaign it would be substantial.

The Mountain Man museum in Cody, Wyoming, would likely have somebody who would know. Possibly, also, at the Museum of the Plains Indian in Grand Teton National Park.

The Mountain Man folks bought my Jim Bridger rifle, so they might be customers for this sort of example.

I would scour as many pics as I could find,,,

Look at as many pictures of scouts that you can get your hands on,,,
Each rifle was decorated by it's scout owner so they are unique.

If by chance you could find a pic of that gun with it's owner,,,
The historical value along with the monetary value would skyrocket.
