Ok I like to buy a model 1873 lever rifle I was looking at the Carbine model and the rifle model made by Urberti. Now I would like to know what rifle was used the most in the 1870s the carbine or the rifle also barrel lenght 19 in or 20.

Thank's

In the 1870s the most common Winchester rifle was the 1866. The most common 73 rifle was the 24 inch barrel rifle with the 20 inch carbine (original Winchester carbines had a 20 inch barrel) a close second. The 20 inch "short rifle" wasn't a common thing till the 1890s, but Winchester offered many custom features on their rifles so it would've been possible in the 1870s.

MJN77 is correct. I have read that the carbine was common in the West while the rifle was more popular for hunting in the East.

That being said, I love my Model '73 44/40 rifle with 30 inch barrel.

i took the advice of the store manager when i purchased my 73. i went with the short rifle. i am so glad i did it. the carbines are stocked funky, the rifles are too long for a pistol cartridge in my opinion. fwiw, bobn

I own a Uberti 1873 carbine and a 24 inch barrel rifle, both in .44-40. I love them both. The rifle can and has killed deer at over 100 yards. The carbine isn't quite as accurate, but is a dandy woods companion. Honestly, there isn't much difference in feel between the two. Both are fairly light and very comfortable to shoulder and carry.
