180 Grain 7 Rem Mag

So, a friend from work wanted to reload for his 7mm Rem Mag, but didn't want to get into the expense of the whole set up. Since he is a friend, I told him if he bought all the particulars we could do it on my set up. He bought the dies and bullets. However, the bullets he bought were 180 grain Berger VLD Hunting. I've looked at the Berger site, the Nosler site and my own Hornady reloading manual and they all max out the 175 grain.

Does anyone have some good working loads for a 180 grain Berger (or any 180 grain .284)? Plan is to use RL 22.

Thanks,

Jerry

I for sure do not, I would think a bullet swap is in order.

R-22 looks viable but you would have to start at the very low end o f 175 gr loads.

Chronograph would be a good idea.

That is pushing the 7mm outside territory it was intended for obviously

So, maybe a dumb question, but why would Berger sell a .284 180 gr and not offer any load information? Maybe for another .284 than the 7 RM?

They show data for their 175gr hunter. I'm sure a studious and attentive reloaded can extrapolate the needed information.

I think if it were me I talk him into getting something other than Bergers to start out with. Every thing I read about them seem's to be they are finicky to load. Number of different 175gr bullet that aren't that finicky.

He thought he bought 168 grain bullets, so the weight we have is not an issue...we can buy other bullets. Just seems a waste...Thanks for the replies.

Berger has data listed in their book. COAL of 3.290
Start load of 57.0 grains should yield 2628 fps.
Max load 60.3 grains should yield 2771 fps. For a barrel length of 26"
It's also worth noting that VldS can be very sensitive to seating depth.

The Berger "target" bullets are somewhat sensitive to seating depth. If it ain't just right accuracy isn't as good, but we're talking about target grade accuracy. Still plenty good enough for most hunting.

Their "hunting" bullets have a slightly different profile and are less sensitive to seating depth, they make both.

The link above does not have data for RL22, but Alliants website shows it for 175's.

If you want to use RL22 I'd use the 175 gr starting data and run with it. A chronograph would be a good idea if you're going to start approaching max loads, but if you stay near mid level loads you should be fine without one. The small difference between 175 and 180 won't make a huge difference until you get near max. I wouldn't want the 180's shooting any faster than what they show as max speed for 175's.

Interseting...

My Berger manual shows 2 pages worth of reloading data for 180gr. bullets.

With 26" barrel RL 22 coal 3.290".
57.0- 2628fps
60.3- 2771 fps.

Me personally i would try RL26 or RL33 and back the charge down some from the 175gr. data.
Of course Quickload would help there.
