18 year old...can I carry?

I am probably on some very new ground to ask/suggest something like this. I am only 18, and therefore cannot buy a hangun. But can I *carry* a handgun? Since I live in MO, I cannot carry concealed. But could I carry overtly?

Handguns are still very very regulated for you until you are 21...

However, if you are in the presence of an adult who is a relative (father/mother or with their permission and Uncle/Aunt Etc) you can go to and from a range with the handgun.

If you live out and away from any of the cities, I think it will depend on how your local sheriff views it....on this side of the state (Jackson county) the sheriff discourages it on the western side of the county (the KC side) but ignores it on the eastern side of the county (the county side)

Shotguns and rifles are OK for you, but again you should be cautious as most any LEO see's someone under 21 with ANY firearm is likly to stop and question you....

I figured this was the case, but just checking into it. I suppose it'll be more rifles for me for another 3 years.

I can vote.
I can be drafted and serve.

Yet I am not allowed to protect myself? Great country this is....!

Hueco...

Keep fighting. It has been proposed on the Federal level to raise the age of handgun ownership/carry to 25. Incrementalism works

You also can't legal buy & drink alcohol. I always had a problem with this -- you're either an adult at 18 with no restrictions or you're not. This 18-21 twilight zone years never made any sense to me. Nothing against you or anyone else caught in that range but I think that our government either needs to raise the age of an adult to 21 or remove the restrictions in place on those adults who are not yet 21 -- you're either an adult or you're not. None of this half-way in the middle stuff.

I'll step in it deep here...but frankly, and no offense to our 18 year-old friend, I would rather the voting age be raised again back to at least 21, if not even higher. (The rationale used in the early 70's to lower it to 18 was due to the draft. Last I checked, there is no more draft, but I digress.)

I'll not drag any of you down to my level of intellect when I was 18, but I had no idea what I would have been voting for...no conception at all for the enormous importance of the act. I now believe in the cliche...wisdom comes with age.

It's certainly not invalid to mix booze, firearms and voting when discussing the subject of age and maturity, however voting...is that not really more important than the other two?

Respectfully

I'll step into this one again as well and no offense to the under-21 adults, but I personally don't care which way it goes as long as it's consistent across the board.

Also, for the under-21 adults ... don't be in too much of a rush to reach adulthood -- enjoy what you have now because you will never have it again. Things might get better or they might get worse but they will never be the same.

Live for the present and not for the future otherwise you'll end up regretting the past. Regards,

As I understand Ohio's gunlaws (I'm probably wrong). You have to be 18 to have a longun in your possession (for lawful purposes), or if you are under 18, you must be in the company of an adult. For Handguns, you must be 21 to be in possesion of a handgun (for lawful purposes), if under you must be in the company of an adult. Now here's the kicker: nothing in that section of the Ohio revised code defines adult. Upon looking up the definition of adult under ORC, its anyone over 18.

So, in theory, when I'm going to the range to shoot my pistol, its legal to have my gun with me. Makes no sense to me. Only laws that mention someone in the 18-20 range in regards to handguns are for LEO's which allows one in that age range to purchase a handgun.

Bunkster I don't believe that wisdom comes with age.Look at our elected officials and the people that have put them into office.I am speaking as a person who is 58 so not a kid.

So basically, the argument is this:

Does wisdom come from responsiblity, or does responsiblity come from wisdom.

Or in really simple terms...which came first, the chicken or the egg?

There are 18 year old's and then there are 18 Year old's.
You sir (judging from your posts)seem mature enough to to meet any standards to be an adult. Then on the other hand some 18 year old's could'nt pour pee out of a boot if the directions were printed on the heel.
But as FUD pointed out....don't be in too big of a hurry to leave your teen years...they only come by once. I would like to re-live my teen years..sigh..I'll be 68 in September. :(

Happy shooting my young friend. :)

I have one thing to say "Old enough to fight and die for the 'country'", old enough to drink, and buy/carry handguns rifles, ect.... Enough said!

Dead, I'm saying the same thing that you are: if you're old enough for one thing then you're old enough for the rest and vice versa: if you're not old enough for one of them, then you shouldn't be old enough for the rest.

Speaking as a 25 year old I can find great sypathy with Huecho's plight. However our culture and society breed incompetece and immoral behavior as a whole. The more we drug our youth instead of diciplining them, the more Culombines and the more Gun control we will have.

For the record Hueco do try and stay within the unfair law. Untill you are 21 most states and even more cities and counties forbid those of draftable age to possess hand-guns. If you must you might look in to a Cap and Ball Wheel gun sold in Cabella's catalog....they are large but still an effetive handgun...and usualy not concidered such by law-but do check localy!

Guys, if you are going to start talking about state law it is best to go to the web page and post it here, read it for yourself.

There is no _federal_ law against youngin's possessing firearms. The 18 year/ 21 year limits are for purchasing a long gun and a hand gun from an FFL only. Private sales do not come into play.

Read the statutes (and case law). Nothing else will do.

Rick

In NM, as long as you are 18, you can carry legally (in the manner that the state allows you to). In TX you can't get a CHL, but you can carry via their other legal methods.
