17m2

Head shots only and yes it would be a good squirrel gun. I've never hunted squirrel but I've seen the damage that a .17HM2 ca do to a prairie dog and body shots on a smaller one wouldn't leave anything to eat on squirrel. An adult sized prairie dog doesn't get torn up near as bad but I'm guessing they will be about twice the size of an average tree rat.

I must say though I was very impressed with the accuracy of the 17HM2. The person who was using it to shoot prairie dogs with me was taking them out at 150 yards with ease. With the accuracy that these little cartridges seem to have I don't think you will have a problem making head shots on squirrels.

I am assuming you mean tree squirrels, not ground squirrels. For a serious squirrel hunter who wants the squirrels for meat, I would stick with a 22. Ammo costs a lot less and is adequate for the purpose.

The 17 Mach2 is a 22LR case necked down to .17, the 17 HMR is a 22 WMR case necked down to .17, different animals. Neither really designed for squirrel hunting, but if you are a head-shot freak you can make it work.

Would a 17m2 be a good squirl gun
Yes, but only if you are looking to put this caliber into service. Have to appreciate what Scorch is saying as I have not problem with .22LR. There are situtaions where I still use long and shorts. I have seen what a .17HMR can do to game and it is definiely overkill on a tree rat. However, it's your call as I never tell a man what to do with his money or his wife.

Be Safe !!!
