Shot this with my Marlin 795 today @ 50 yards:

My setup = Nikon Rimfire 4x32 and Harris bipod

I am now hooked on rimfire target shooting:(. That being said, between the 17 HMR and 22 WMR, which would you recommend for 50 yard and 100 yard target shooting? Why?

Let me know. Thanks.

If you're only going to use it for target shooting I'd go with the .17. It seems to have the accuracy edge over the .22WMR.

Hello, Hank15. If your interested in target shooting from 50 to 100yds, May I suggest a .22 long Rifle match rifle? While the group on that target is good hunting accuracy, a good heavy barreled .22 prone type rifle will do much better than that at 100yds. Best of luck!

I don't know anything about the .17, never even held one. Wanted to be up front about that.
A few years ago I had a real need for a pest control rifle. I bought a Savage model 93 bolt-action .22wmr. it was inexpensive and available left-handed
( I'm a southpaw ). Then I mounted a cheap Gander mtn. 3x9 on it. I zeroed it at 50yds and my pest control problem vanished quickly. The largest "pest" to date was a rabid fox put down with one shot at almost exactly the 50yd mark. these experiences made me a big fan of the .22mag.

Best wishes, Bill

.22 and .17 are fun to shoot with. I prefer the Accutrigger of the Savage better than my two old Marlin Model 60 and 917VS but they are fun to shoot with nonetheless. Marlin came out with a Trigger system just like the Accutrigger. Check out their new Model XT sereies. I might pick up one... Good Luck!

The only advantage 22mag has over 17hmr in any catergory once it leaves the barrel is its better performance against thick bone i.e. a raccoon skull. And even that is minimal. Accuracy wise, trajectory wise, 17hmr all day. Yes 22mag has been a great round for a long time ad they work great for just about every application where a 17hmr coukd be used. But change happens..17hmr is a better round.

I have a 17 and it very accurate however if ammo cost is an issue to you then stick with the 22lr honestly a target 22 is accurate and cost effective the 17 is fine for varmint shooting but again ammo cost is IMO high for target shooting in high numbers. But to answer your question if your certain you want to move up the 17HMR will be the accuracy king.

for paper I would pick the 17HMR. I feel the 17 is more accurate and has less bullet drop. If I was getting it as a small game rifle then I would go with the 22 mag.

IF you are looking for a cheep plinking gun then the 22lr all the way.
