Looking at getting some 178gr a-max for my 1:10 twist Savage.

I was just looking for anyone that has used them? What do you think about them at the 600yd mark? Do you have to push them hard to accomplish accuracy?

I currently use 155gr SMK Palmas

Thanks.

I prefer Sierra 175 gr Matchkings to them, personally. But they are still good bullets. When I was loading them (only used about 200), I did not have to push them too fast to get them to shoot decently.

My top choices (in the 175 gr weight range) are:
1. Berger 175 gr VLD
2. Sierra 175 gr MK
3. Hornady 178 gr A-Max

I'm just not a fan of any 155 gr Palma bullets for long range work.

I have some SMK 175gr that I haven't tried out yet or done a workup for. Haven't had the time before the matches. I might have to do a workup before the match I plan going to in October.

Pushing any bullet "hard" will rarely produce best accuracy with it. Normal, max, safe peak pressures are typically the best. Just don't spin them too fast with the rifling twist. 175 to 180 grain bullets from a .308 Win. case typically do best with a 1:12 twist. Faster ones will work just fine if a bit less than maximum loads are used.

Just shot a few nice groups with the 178 target (non plastic tipped) using Varget. I'd have to check my book but 44 grains and it shot under an inch.

I missed the 1:10 twist. I'd. Try Sierra 190 or 200 HPMK's that have shot better in 1:10's than some 1:12 twists.

Sweet. May have to order some and try them out. Had some pretty good groups working up the 175gr SMK over 2000-MR. Not quite ready to try them out in comp until I do a bit more testing with them though. The 155 SMK Palmas are working pretty good for the time being. I keep increasing my scores so don't want to change too much right now. Lol. Come 2014 though, I plan to bring it though. I'll be aiming for that top spot next year in the matches I shoot in. The last part of this year, I'm just trying to soak up as much as I can and gain the experience.
