Anyone have any experience with hornadys new projectile?(178 grn eldx) It's weight is not recognized in my load charts. I'm thinking about picking a start load between 175 data and 180. Maybe 41 grns of varget or 4064?

In a 308 Winchester 41 grs of 4064 would be a safe mild load.

Should give you about 2550 fps, out of a 24 inch barrel, will within the pressure limits of the 308 Win.

I load 42 grns with the 175 SMK out of my Model 70 target rifle and my M1A but I haven't tried the 178 eldx.

Agreed.

Hornady lists a range of bullet weights and types all with the same powder levels on their pages (as does Sierra)

My take is that its more than safe for the heaviest listed.

Reasonably lowered load should do perfectly fine and work your way up.

Check Hornady site, they may have listing for it as well.

Just as a reference I'm running 43 grains of Varget behind a 178g AMAX. 2612 fps out of a 26" bartlein. Obviously you'll want to work up your load to your rifle, but just wanted to let you know that what I'm using seems to be just fine.

Thanks! I will start with 41 grns and work up as needed. These projectiles are supposed to be the latest and greatest through hornady. Have any of you been on their website and seen the video they posted about the deficiencies of the a max and other plastic tiped projectiles? Apparently they go to $#!t when they reach so many fps.

Also loaded these for a buddy in short action mag length for his Tikka with 41g of Varget. It shot lights out, not super fast but accuracy trumps speed in my book.
