.17 rem AR platform or bolt action?

This little caliber has gotten my interest as a possibility for my next gun purchase. I am torn between building an AR upper which I could swap in and out with my 6.5 Grendel upper. Or buying a bolt action. More than likely rem 700 as I am a bit partial to them. Any suggestions woul be helpful.

What are you going to use it for? The ability to swap out uppers with your AR platform would be nice, but at what cost? If your varmint hunting you really don't need to shell out the dough for a AR upper or a 700, when a Savage will meet and exceed all your expectations for even long range varmint shooting.

I dont really have a specific use in mind. I really just want one to help fill the open space in my gun collection. Ive got a couple magnums, .300 Win Mag and a 7STW both 700's and a couple of mid calibers, .257 roberts ruger #1 and the grendel that I spoke of. Now all I need is a small, fast tack driver and the .17 rem seems to fit the bill. Is it something I absolutely need? No. But you know as gun nuts we are never quite satisfied. I figure I will use it for ear shots on ferel hogs and white patch on does. It will also be used to dispatch coons and coyotes. The .17 also seems like a good low recoil gun for off-season marksmanship practice.

If you have the money to try it out get the Alexander arms .17hrm upper. The round is amazingly accurate in a bolt gun so the ar design shouldn't be to bad either. Would be something not many have as well, bragging rights are nice ;)

I have looked at those which would be pretty sweet. Only problem is that the HMR is not centerfire making illegal to shoot a deer with if I wanted to. I feel like if I am going to justify spending the money I should be able to kill a deer with it. Dont get me wrong kx592 the alexander arms HMR does look fun.

This brings me back to my first point, the money. If money is no issue, then by all means go with the AR Upper, because it would be very cool to just switch out uppers and , boom, new gun. If money is an issue you can't go wrong with a Savage. Sure you might be able to find a remington for $500-$600, but it's probally gonna be an ugly base model with a sinthetic stock. I don't care what anyone say's about Savage, (most people don't like them because there so inexspensive, for some reason?) they are phenomenal little rifles. I own three, a MarkII .22 cal, a M64 Semi-auto .22, and my favorite, the M93R17. The 93 is an absolute tack driver, my buddy and I frequently have little competitions to see who can shoot the most dimes or pennies at a hundred yards within a given time and with x amount of rounds. I can tell you that you can't shoot a hole in the new pennies, the just shatter when you hit them:D You can pick up a 93 from $250-$500, depending on how pretty you want it. Let us know what you end up buying!

Thanks for the info! Money isn't really too much of an issue for if it I wanted to go with the AR upper I could build it little by little a part or two each month at the local gun shows. You have got my interest with the savage so I will definitly look in to them I am not against savage I had a .22lr that ws an absolute shooter although I did have some extractor problems. I have never owned one in a centerfire.

I can Vogue for the Savage 93 as well, I can get 1/4'' @ 100yrds with mine and its got the garbage plastic stock on it. Cost 290 at dicks with glass. Its my go to gun for squirrels and what not.

I checked out savages website all I could find that savage chambers is the .17 HMR. This is a rimfire cartridge, I am interested in the .17 rem which is centerfire. Do you know if Savage produces a rifle in this chambering?

Wow, I guess I should have paid more attention to your original post!:o As far as I know Savage does not make a rifle in .17 REM, and building one would soon cost way too much money. That AR Upper is looking better and better!

The 17 rem is a screamer, but also a barrel burner. And, i havent seen any factory ammo in that caliber. I would consider the 204 ruger unless you reload. Plus, there is a better selection of bullets for the 20 caliber over the 17. For a bolt gun, savage has an excellent tatack driving 22-250 varminter. just a couple of suggestions, but get what YOU want, so you do live with "what if's" good luck, and keep us posted as to what you pick. Oh, the 22-250 smokes deer out to 200 yards easily! I think tjat may just be my next caliber rifle. That or my mauser 270....
