.17 HRM FMJ

Just saw these last night while picking up some CCI TNT 17 gr HP. What would the CCI 17 gr FMJ be good for, it would be like shooting a needle when it comes to shooting fur. I just can't see any good use

My savage loves the 20 grain CCI FMJ ammo. I get the best accuracy with it for some reason and Walmart sells it cheap $11.97. I guess it's best for situations where penetration is vital. It's my go to 17 HMR ammo.

There must be a niche this combo fills but not for me. I choose the 17 HMR when I want quick expansion and lower chance of pass through when removing varmints. If I feel the need for more penetration than the V-Max gives, I'll just use a bigger gun.
According to the 17hmr forum, the guys "down under" get pretty creative with the uses for a 17 HMR.

Good round for trappers. That a the only primary use I can see. My single six shot them very well. But for ending a trapped animal you don't really need range.

I use them for shooting hogs in the head. They do penetrate better than the standard rounds and I've never had one run when shot with the FMJ's. On the other hand, I have shot hogs with the regular 17 gr. pointed (Hornady's?) and had them head for the hills squealing the entire time. So, for what I'm doing, the FMJ's work real well.

The v max hornadys are frangible within mere centimeters of penetration. great for blowing up varmints woodchuck and smaller. But on cyotes, they've been known to only cause flesh wounds and not penetrate far enough to cause immediate incapacitation. The FMJs CAN create very similar exposive results INTERNALLY on a cyote. So,minimizing pelt damage, the fmj is solid enough to penetrate deep, and cause a very devastating shockwave to course through the body of the cyote, but is still so light that it slows down really fast to the point of no exit or to a smaller exit because of energy loss... but not alwys of course. Exellent round for a lil bigger target (when your sure you can hit it in the right spot and are more consious of whats behind it just in case.)

Please don't shoot a Coyote with a 17HMR, they might be varmints but they need to be dispatched as humanely as all other animals.

I shoot Coyotes with my bow and don't feel bad about it. What's wrong with a 17HMR?? I'm guessing these guys aren't reaching out to 300 yards and trying to kill them. For close up shots it would be fine.

I've shot and killed close to a dozen yotes out to 100 yards with a 17 hmr. All being one shot kills. is it the best gun for the job? Prolly not... But it can be done fast quick and to the point.
