.17 HMR

Looking at a Mod. 455 CZ and a 77/17 Ruger.
Both are exact same price but CZ comes with extra 22 LR barrel.
Which rifle best for shootin critters in Montana?

Hard to go wrong with a CZ. Good actions, barrels, and triggers.

The Ruger 77's have had hit or miss accuracy issues over the years. If you get a good one, it's great. If you get a bad one, you will spend lots of money and time trying to get it to shoot. Trigger is not as good as the CZ imho.

I would also look at the Savage 93 series. Great accuracy and triggers.

Yes I agree.

And the CZ as you said comes with a extra barrel in .22 lr, which has dirt cheap ammo so if you want to do some target practice some its cheaper to shoot the .22 lr and you can even shoot some critters with the .22 lr depends on how big.

Of those two, the CZ.
Excellent quality & with two barrels you have more options.
Stick good glass on it & hit the dirt.

I have an FS 455 with all three barrels.

Does anyone have experience with the Ruger American Rimfire in .17HMR? I know the Savage is a good shooter but I haven't heard much about the Ruger

Dead caliber...on its way out. Notice how few actually make the ammo anymore?
.22WMR does it harder & better with the new bullets and more style choices...
.223 does it better with reloadable style ;)

Where is .22 LR at dirt cheap price? I do like my Marlin 917 V and hope the .17 HMR is not a done deal round.

The .17 rifles and ammo fly off the shelves around here. We have plenty of little critters that this caliber is perfect for. I agree the .223 is a great upgrade from the rimfire realm but the .17 is super accurate and I want one!

And I agree, .22lr is non existent around here and it took me 4 months to land a box of .22wmr. The .17hmr is readily available.

I have a 77/17 and can honestly say it will do things few other rifles can do. Three shots on a dime @ 100 yards consistently (if there's no wind). The
Grandsons(aged 9 & 10) were busting fist sized gourds last fall at 75 yards and having more fun than you can imagine. I can shoot a groundhog right next to a building or livestock w/o much worry of ricochet or bullet pass through.

Mobuck, the 77/17 is a very different rifle than the Ruger American Rimfire, do you have any experience with the RAR? Its a better looking, feeling rifle than the Savage or the Marlin.

Today, with a nice little Leupold Ultralight scope, the .17 barrel's two best five-shot 100-yard groups through the 455 were under an inch.

The .22 Mag barrel didn't do quite as well, a hair under 1 1/2 inches.

Yesterday, the .22 LR barrel's best was also just a hair under 1 1/2 inches.

Not bad, for a sporter-weight barrel, in variable cloudy lighting.

No, I don't have any experience with the RAR. The OP asked about a Ruger 77/17 and that was what I commented on.

I have three of the Ruger American Rimfires, including a .17HMR and it is a solid (American made) rifle at a very good price.

It uses the same mags as the 77/17 but differs quite a bit. It has two v-blocks in the stock for bedding, an adjustable trigger design that is easy to tune, a tang safety and it's available it two different barrel lengths, with or without the muzzle threaded.

Probably one of the best things to come from Ruger in a long time. There are lots of happy owners over at RFC.

Good luck.

I found a RAR .17 locally today and stuck a BSA Sweet 17 on it. I will let everyone know how I like it when I get to the range

Why would you use a rim fire when you can load your own and not worry about supplies or accuracy. How about a Ruger 204 or a 17 Hornet. My Ruger 77 in a 22 K Hornet will keep the groups under a inch all day.

Longshot, I have a .223 Ruger American as well. I do not reload........yet! That is in next years budget. Since I shoot .44mag and .357mag often I can see the benefit of reloading now.

I can buy a 50rd box of .17hmr varmint locally for around $20, a 20rd box of .223 varmint is around the same price. FMJ .223 is about $7 a box for plinking. Both rifles are affordable to plink with and a whole lot of fun. I can also take care of yotes, fox, groundhog and other small critters easily with both.

I really like most things Ruger but if they are the same price and those are your two choices (CZ or Ruger) go with the CZ.

Rimfire vs Centerfire

In TN it's illegal to fire a centerfire round 1/2 hour before/after sunrise/sunset ... but rimfire is ok. 17's are nice little round with amazing accuracy. Good for ticking off coyotes (notice I didn't say killing).
