17 HMR vs. .22 lr

What would you choose for small game and varmints? I have .22 rifles and they served me good throughout the years but I like the way the .17 HMR shells are shaped and I wanted to try one out and experiment with it.

I agree with the other responders. I have .22's, a .22 magnum rifle and a .17 HMR. They are all fun in there on way, but the .22 magnum and .17 will cost significantly more in ammo cost to enjoy. They are also more destructive of the meat portion of small game. Of course, they will reach well beyond the capability of your typical .22 LR round.

The .17 HMR is a necked down version of the .22 magnum.

The 17 hmr has it's uses but for just plinking and rabbit/squirrel hunting the 22lr is quite adequate. If I were going out after vermin, I'd take the 17 hmr for it's increased killing power and flatter trajectory.

Thanks for the advice guys,Im going to purchase one! Which brand of frearm would be the best? I think Savage makes one,How about a Savage? Oh yeah the shape of the shell looks sweeeet:D

Actually Im thinking of going with a Henry Acu-Bolt .17 HMR but I dont know if these guns are small like youth models because I thought the henry models are small! I actually want a single shot bolt action instead of a clip model! Any ideas?

I have a Marlin 917V with a heavy barrel, and it is deadly accurate. I read one review saying it was one of the most accurate; although they were critical of the magazine detaching itself from the rifle. I have not had such a problem. It is a pleasure to shoot.

If you buy a CZ 455 you can have the best of both worlds. 1 17HMR barrel, and 1 22 LR barrel. Two mags (one for each) but just a quick barrel change and you have both toys!!

For groundhogs and what not where if you blow them up and its ok they are great, just never liked it for squirrels because it blows them to pieces. Still its a better cartridge imo

don't forget to look at the Mach 2

I built a custom 17 Mach 2 on an old Marlin 22 bolt action gun, added a BSA sweet 17 scope... & ended up with the perfect farmyard varmint rifle

I've reduced my pesky red pine squirrel population quite nicely with it...

MRS MAGNUM has killed 3-4 Racoons that the farm dog has tree'd while I was at work... it's accurate out to 200 yards, & effective on farm yard pests to 100-150 yards depending on conditions & quarry

cartridges have been very reasonably priced... pretty easy to get on line ( though not alot available locally )

i really like both so thats a hard call. If the ammo was the same price i think id pick the 17 as my fav, but until that happens the cheapness of the 22 rounds will keep it a tie. Right now im more into the 17hmr....just picked up a sweet little henry carbine in 17 that i cant wait to try out.

There a blast & makes a good critter getter most are more accurate than the 22's & on a calm day 150 or 200yrds.can be done fun fun ;):D

I had No luck trying to find a single bolt action 17hmr, only ones I found are youth guns,im scared of clip models(jamming) :barf::barf::barf:

Get a Marlin XT17, Adult Rifle, 4-round & 7-round mags which are shared with the .22WMR versions.
Feeding ain't an issue, they've got Pro-Fire adjustable triggers, micro-groove barrels for precision,
and heck, they've also got Boyd's laminate stock options (917V series)...what's not to love?

I love my 17HMRs. That said I did not all ready have 22LRs.

17 ammo is more expensive. I feel its worth the extra cost but your mileage may vary.

Bought a Savage mod 64 for the wife a month ago.

Really like this rifle. came with 4X scope and life warranty for $159. Shoots very straight. Scope isn't great but it's included. Don't take me wrong, scopes not terrible, just not a great scope! It's up a bit in price now...

My 22WMR ammo here is almost the same price as 9mm. Very much hotter, but too much more money for plinking and varmits. Go the 22lr. Add a 22WMR later :-)
