17 HMR Savage 93R17

My Wife's Uncle gave me a savage 93R17 to sight in for him for Ground hogs. He had a box of CCI Varmint in the case. I was going to sight it in MPBR using a 4" vitals.

From what I have read this seems like a pretty flat round and from my experience with Savage, it should be a pretty tight shooting gun. It has a 20" bull barrel on it.

Anyone have any input or experience with it?

Love the gun and ammo

I use this rifle and round every year. Use it on prairie dogs when I get out to SD and on varmits here in the South. Comfortable shooting out to 200 yards with it
On a prop and it works well on most small to medium game. I sight this round in 1 inch high at 100 yards

great rifle

I've shot eight ground hogs so far, have same Savage... Very accurate and love the trigger. Longest shot about 150 yards one and done.

Have that exact gun as well and have been very pleased. Been very accurate for me. Routinely shooting sub-MOA at 100 yards when I do my part. Seem to like the 17gr Hornady ammo, but shoot nice with anything. I think the trajectory starts getting fairly drastic when you are getting much above 150 yards (less so than other rimfires though), but with a 4" MPBR you should get pretty good distance from it.

Picked up an older one (pre-accutrigger/plastic stock) a while back and at first was not too impressed. I had previously shot a friends m77-17 and boy was that a tack-driver. After some fussing around bedding the action and making sure the barrel was free-floating it calmed down and now shoots easy 1"@100yrds if I do my part. If I feed it fairly new Hornady ammunition it shoots even better than 1".

I have the same gun except mine has the thumb hole laminate stock and bull barrel. Mine shoots the 17 grain vmax pretty accurately out to about 100 yards but after that accuracy falls off quite drastically (3"-4" groups at 175 yards) my rifle prefers the 20 grain xtp game point, cci and hornady's shoot exactly the same. I've shot sub 1" 5 shot groups at 150 yards off a bench. The gun is extremely accurate if you do your part. I sight in dead on at 150 yards and it does well for me. My longest kill shot was a ranged 150 yards off hand on a ground hog.

I use one to dust coyotes with. I use the Hornady 17 grain Vmax. 150 yards is my absolute max to kill dogs. Mine is the pencil / skinny barrel with cryptic camo stock. On the bench it's a tack driver, 1" groups are not really hard to do. The Hornady and Winchester ammo shoot the same. I love the rifle and the round.

I have the one with a laminated stock and bull barrel. Love it! I shoot offhand rifle matches with it. Its the best squirrel gun I ever used. Just aim for the head.

I got the trigger where I want it. It requires occasional cleaning.

Prefers Hornady or CCI A17.
