158gr LSWCHP +p (FBI load) duplication.

I am using this load for CCW in my LCR. I am trying to dupilacte it with reloads for practice use. What are some good choices? Best I have found so far has been 6.0 gr power pistol at a little over 1000fps in the alliant manual. Hornady also show 6.0 grs with a xtp.
 
I have run that Alliant load (Speer manual has the same). Speer 158 LSWCHP did just under 1,000 from a 4" Model 64. I usually load 5.8 gr PP for 944 from that gun. Hits POA with the fixed sights.

This is the Speer #14 max too. And I have loaded this exact round with a Speer swaged LSWCHP. Through my Smith 67 w/ 4" bbl; it yields an average velocity of 962 f/s.

Strictly for the purpose of having a +P+ recipe handy for my K-frame, I have loaded beyond the Speer published max with Power Pistol to yield an average velocity of 1057 f/s - a 20% increase in kinetic energy over the published max. At which point, I was satisfied with the performance and ceased working up - there were no signs of excessive pressure. I will not specify the charge weight. And I do not in any way recommend other handloaders attempting the same. My Smith 67 is new and sturdy. I will never shoot this recipe in my J-frame Model 60 (even though some J-frames are chambered for 357 Magnum; and this load recipe is under magnum max pressures, with little doubt). For that matter, I will likely never shoot the recipe in my K-frame again - barring extraordinary circumstances.

I would say that the old "FBI load" was reasonably emulated with my work up. That said, IMO, the published max 6.0gns is a plenty stout round. Properly placed, it's gonna neutralize most any target.
 
Have any of you tried the Magnus swaged 158 LSWC-HP?
It's a lot better looking bullet than the Speer or Hornady. Sharp clean edges, a bigger nose and a bigger 2 stage hollow point. I have no means of doing a realistic test, so I was wondering if anyone had.

Yes, I have. Those will expand at 4" 38 SP velocities and give about 6" of penetration in wet newsprint. I think I used AA#5 for the 38 loads but not 100% sure. Accurate enough for use on groundhogs out to 25 yards.
 
Cool, thanks, I thought that looked like a good bullet. I think I'll load some up for my carbine and aim for 1,100 fps in magnum brass.
 
Just my opinion but I wouldn't go much higher than 1100fps. Pretty soft so might lead badly in a rifle. I'd also expect extreme expansion since my loads were in the 875-900 range and expansion was around 0.50-0.60".

I didn't mention it in my first post. . . But the Speer soft swaged LSWCHP at 1057 f/s leads up the barrel something fierce. After just 30 rounds, there was easily visible lead throughout the entire length of the barrel.

But when I did my workup, leading was not a consideration at all. It's about neutralizing the BG first; worry about barrel leading later.
