I am the lucky and happy owner of a couple of 1911-type pistols, some real (Colts) and some not. I have managed to acquire a real Colt National Match Gold Cup in .38 Spec WC and a ParaOrdnance 14-45 Signature Limited in 40 S&W. All the rest of my 1911-types are in the original ,45 ACP.

I also have a couple of 9x19MM pistols (G17, M9 [copy]) and enjoy them. I carried the G17 for about ten years and learned to love it.

I have always been curious about the 1911's that are chambered for the 9X19MM and .38 Super. I don't have much interest in the .38 Super, but I am really curious about how well the 9X19MM performs in a 1911-type action.

If anyone has first hand experience with a pistol of this sort, please post your observations and recommendations. I am also interested in knowing about which companies currently make such a pistol. Likewise, if you know of such a pistol that is currently up for sale, please advise.

Thanks to all --

PS -- This is a GREAT forum and I enjoy the opportunity to look at the many posts. Today, 12/11/01, three months after the NYC/PIT and DCA terror, after three months of seeing how the Afghans (and many of the other people in that part of the world) have been cut off from any opportunity to express themselevs, I especially appreciate this sort of forum.

MD,

I have a Full size "Loaded" ss in 9mm from Sprinfield Armory and absolutely love it. With 500 rounds so far, it has been flawless. It's a pleasure to shoot and can hold much tighter groups than I can. I will be adding an Optima red dot soon to see if I can narrow the POI's. I've been shooting mostly ball ammo through it for breakin and will switch to other kinds of ammo on the next trip to the range.

I know of such a pistol currently up for sale. It is a gunuine Colt.

I have difficulty understanding the attraction of a 1911 in 9mm.

There are so many BETTER gun-design choices in 9mm ready made, that to choose the venerable 1911 design seems heedless of those better designs.

As Jeff Cooper said, most people who choose the 9mm do so for the sake of the gun designs available for this cartridge, while most who choose the .45ACP do so for the cartridge itself, and he further opined that "if one is going to carry a gun with an underpowered cartridge, he might as well carry the neatest and handiest one available, and that is the H&K P7".

I mean no despite to the 1911 design at all, which I quite like, but there is the further concept of "size efficiency", as advanced by Mark Moritz. This mostly pertains to CCW rather than actual shooting, of course, but the 9mm simply doesn't require a platform as big as the 1911.
Best.

Sawbones, the problem is that you assume that everyone who buys a gun or owns a gun does so for personal protection. There are many of us that simply enjoy shooting guns and enjoy owning guns just for the sake of owning them. There are also people who collect 1911s and or Colts. There are also people who enjoy the 1911 frame and wish all there guns felt the same and had the same controls. I once owned a 1911 in a .22LR. I still own a conversion kit to convert a 1911 to .22 LR. You might also want a gun that is just like your .45 only with less recoil and cheaper to shoot. There are also many many thousands of people that think the 1911 design is the best ever made regardless of caliber.
The only reason I don't own the gun in Terry's shop is because I just don't want to spend the money on it. I want it though.

I have a 1991A1 9mm with upgrades to about SA Loaded level, only better fitted. It is my IDPA ESP gun. Same feel, same holster, same operation, same gunsmith, same spare parts, mostly, as my .45 CDP gun. I have read Master class shooters to call them sluggish in operation, but I am not sharp enough to tell or fast enough for it to matter. I also load full charge ammo which is not much below factory .38 Super so as to get positive function. Of course my carry gun - an OACP - weighs less than 40 oz.

I would like to see the 9.8mm Colt or 9.65mm Grand Browning brought back. The 1911 design scaled down in proportion to the caliber. I don't think we need another medium caliber round but the guns would be perfect platforms for 9mm, .38 or .40 cals.

444 -- Another "X" Ring Hit For You

444 is in the X-Ring with his comments --- not all pistols are meant to be carried for self defense. I have a couple of honest CCW handguns and I wouldn't carry a 9MM 1911 regardless. My interest is in knowing about the functional quality of the standard 9MM Parabellum or 9MM Luger on a full sized 1911 platform. After ten years of carrying a G17 and two years of carrying a BerM96D Brigadier, I simply think a 9MM Government Model might be a nice combination of punch, recoil and feel.

Keep it up -- tell me more about your views on the 9MM GM.

I'd like to find one , I like the 2 safety cocked and locked carry but because of a nerve problem in my hand I have a problem shooting much more than a nine. Plus anything in the world you could possibly think of to put on or in a pistol is available for the 1911 platform.

My wife recently gave me a pair of Springfield Loaded 1911s in 9mm. One's the all stainless full size and the other is the alloy framed Light Weight Ultra Compact.

Both perform quite well with my handloads, and I'm contemplating shooting the full size in IDPA's ESP division...

In the past I've owned Colts in both .38 Super and 9mm and never had any performance problems attributable to the chambering.

For guns to buy: try www.gunbroker.com and www.auctionarms.com and search on "Springfield 9mm" or "Colt 9mm".

Hello. I like 9mm and don't even mind using it for defense. I bought a 1911 style handgun in this caliber as I like them, too, and have several in its traditional caliber. Right now, factory 9mm ammo can be had cheaply and over the years, I've come up with some pretty warm, but safe 9mm handloads that group well and have terminal performance satisfactory for small game and varmint hunting.

My favorite 9mm handgun is the old Browning Hi Power. I've shot 'em for 30 years and shot them with some pretty warm loads. Using 18.5 lb springs and a buffer, they hold up well, but I believe that the 1911 platform is tougher in the long run if one does shoot quite a bit of the warm stuff.

And it's a good excuse to own yet another pistol.

All that said, I have nothing but praise for STI's Trojan in 9mm.
Mine is the long slide version and it groups just as well as my P210. I have no personal experience with the 5" 9mm Trojan, but suspect strongly that it's a very good performer.

Best.

Hey, you guys that want one, call my buddy Terry. He is a dealer here in my hometown. He has a nice one. I am sure he could take a few digital pictures and send them to you. I have grown quite fond of him over the years and anytime someone on the net says they are looking for something he has, I try to get a sale for him. I don't think anyone has called him yet.

I have a ser. 70 Colt Commander in 9mm. After adding a new extractor (Aftec) the gun has been flawless. I got the Commander length because I thought that the shorter slide length might compensate for the possible sluggishness of the round. The gun is accurate and reliable and the light recoil makes it a pleasure to shoot.

Why the 1911 in 9mm? I already have a parts drawer full of 1911 parts which work with the 9mm Colt. All of my holsters fit which means no new leather. I don't have to learn a new manual of arms. The weight of the gun (steel frame) plus the 9mm round makes it a pussycat to shoot. The aftermarket parts for the 1911 means that I can customize the gun to fit my tastes. But most all, it has the 1911 ergonomics and trigger.

Wouldn't you know it. He gets in some nice used stuff and when I hear someone say they are looking, I try to get them together. Now someone calls and it is sold. Figures. Oh, well, good luck finding one.

I have spanish super star model B 9mm, (yeah, I know, not 100% 1911), but close enough for me, :)
yes, 9mm for 1911 style is a little over kill, big and heavy, but bonus is less felt recoil and more accurate, so you can enjoy shooting MORE,

Another endorsement here for the Springfield Armory Government Loaded in 9mm. I like the 1911 design, but am a cheap ba$tard and don't like to pay .45 ammo prices. I like to shoot, and 9mm is cheap. So, I get the best of both worlds. I'll say this much. As much as I enjoy shooting this thing, it's far more accurate than I am!
