130gr JHP HST load

Midway is having a sale on some blemished bullets. I bought 600 130gr HST bullets. These are the bullets used for 38sp. HST rounds. This bullet seats
flush with the end of the case like a wad cutter. I'm looking for load data
and/or powder recommendations. BTW the cost was only $16.00/100 and free freight it you buy over $50.00

I don't know the length of the bullet, so I hesitate to recommend anything, though it will probably turn out that something like 231/HP38 or possibly even Power Pistol will work. Too many unknowns, otherwise.
 
I was having a senior moment.

Thanks for the info. I had it in my mind I needed to load these bullets just like the HST 38spl ammo. The factory bullets are loaded flush with the end of the case. Loading them like that would be the same as making a bomb!
The actual bullet measures 0.610 BTW and they have a cannelure. I just wasn't thinking at all. Sorry to waste your time.

Even loaded flush, they are no worse than a wadcutter and are in that same length range. QuickLOAD thinks Power Pistol is one of the best choices, giving loads a little over 3.5 grains for just under 1000 fps from a 6" barrel. This does not take barrel/cylinder gap loss into consideration.

Unfortunately I have not loaded up any for 38 special yet. But if you start using them in 357magnum I did work some up for that.

I bought some from midway too. I have a hot 158 gr SWC load that i use. 6.5 grains of HS-6 and a magnum primer in 38 special. I decided with that lighter bullet but being seated deeper in the case it’s probably about the same in terms of pressure. I loaded some of these 130 gr jacketed wad cutters with 6.5 gr of HS-6 and a mag primer in a 38 special case. And will shoot them from a stout 357 mag gun and run them through the chrono. If velocities exceed 1000 fps I’ll back the charge down. If not, I’ll run that load.

I'm going to guess that faster vel. may hurt expansion? Just a guess
but maybe the bullets start shedding pedals if you push them too fast?
It would seem even at low vel. these bullets leave more than a big welt

I think the greater velocity may actually result in greater expansion and less penetration. I’ll keep you posted on this thread, but it may take some time. I’ve got a few loading projects on the bench right now.

Well i went and tested the 6.5 grains of HS6 load today. It’s too hot. From a four inch barrel i got 1170 fps and barely penetrated three water jugs with violent expansion and jacket separation. Sticky extraction. I’ll try 6.0 grains and run it again. Accuracy was great.
With the level of expansion I’m guessing this will be an excellent bullet once i get it down to 1000 fps from a snubnose.

I think the vel. range is on the lower side to work well

The sweet spot must be below 1000fps. I haven't loaded any yet as my
stuff is at work (so the wife doesn't know) and the heat and humidity right now
I think would effect the ammo,s life span. When I do I will post it.

Finally got to try some 130gr HST reloads

I use a Ruger 4" barrel GP100 and a S&W 642 with a 1-7/8" barrel.
I loaded 10 rounds of each load. All bullseye, WSP primers and Speer 130gr HST BULLETS
10rd 4.5grs bullseye @1.47" OAL crimped on the cannelure=840fps W/RUGER 4" barrel
10rd 4.8grs bullseye @1.47" OAL crimped on the cannelure=899fps W/4" RUGER barrel
NOTE THE NEXT TWO RESULTS HAD THE BULLET SEATED ALMOST FLUSH WITH THE END OF THE CASE

6rds 4.0grs bullseye @1.173" OAL and crimped with the bullet end just out of the end of the case. The 4" barrel gave 960fps

4rds 4.0grs bullseye @1.173" OAL and crimped with the bullet end just past the end of the case. The 1-7/8" barrel gave 887fps WITH A S&W 642
There was zero signs of pressure on any rounds.
This is pretty limited as a test especially the last test with 2 guns but the vel
seemed more consistent with the bullets seated deep. It was 36 degrees out so I didn't take my time but all loads were accurate

My latest test had perfect expansion and penetration into water jugs at 900 fps. That seems to be the sweet spot.

QUESTION

Are you loading .357 brass or 38spl brass.
All mine are for 38spl brass. Also what if your oal?

This load had a lesson for me

I always use 50 round loading blocks. I look at all the cases with a flash light
after they are charged. First time I ever found a double charge. An entire row of 10.
Safety is everything have a procedure and use it.
