Never having shot anyone, I do not have any personal experience with either round with regard to self-defense shooting. However, check out Evan Marshall's Official Stopping Power Charts which compare the real world effectiveness of various rounds.

In gel, bare/cloth:

125 GD 357SIG: 16/.60, 19/.54

165 GD: 13/.65, 16/.60

125 Rem: 14/.60, 18/.54

165 GS: 13/.65, 16/.60

125 Fed: 14/.60, 20/.54

165 Fed HS: 18/.63, 19/.56

About 1350 fps/500 ft lbs for the 357, around 1075/425 for the 165 40s (except the Fed: 970/345) from SIG P229

Both appear to be doing as well as the 357 Magnum ever did. The 357 SIG is louder, the 165 40s kick more. A small accuracy/reliability edge to the 357.

Texas, Delaware, New Mexico state police using 357 Gold Dot, US Secret Service the Ranger T. FBI the 165 HS, DEA the 165 GS, US Marshals the 165 Ranger T, INS/Border Patrol the 155 JHP.

Well, both are quality SD rounds, and I wouldn't like to be shot with either. The 125gr .357 HP has compiled one of the best street records of any round over a long period, so it's hard to dismiss it. I'm sure that quality 165gr .40 rounds will have a good record when all the points are tallied. Really, there is too much emphasis on bullet type, and not enough on training and practice. I'd rather depend on a 9mm and lots of practice than a "magic" bullet and little practice.
