12 ga tannerite

.22rimfire

just saw tannerite on the shelf at gander mountain and wondered if a 12 gauge rifled slug will set it off as this is the highest caliber I have thanks
:)

Tannerite site says shotgun and pistol will not set it off, has to be centerfire rifle round over 2000fps.

Will a 9mm carbine attain the necessary fps?
Or .45?

Inquiring minds would like the boom it would make.:D

.

There are many brands of explosive target material other than Tannerite. Some, like Tannerite, are not so sensitive and react only to the velocity of a centerfire rifle. Others are very sensitive (or have more sensitive versions) that will "detonate" with a .22 pistol.

I hit one container with my .357 GP100- with all fairness, it might have been a glancing blow but it didn't set it off. Tannerite is definitely rifle cartridge speed territory.

.45acp --no.

9mm Luger - no - but it might be possible.

It would take an off the book handload & probably a solid copper or solid aluminum bullet to get there though & more screwing around with things that will kill you dead in a hurry than it's worth.

I tried setting some off a few weeks ago with my Ruger PC9 carbine... no go. Same result with .22 rifle and .45acp pistol.
My Winchester 94 in .32 did the job nicely.

I have set it off with a 17 HMR. I dont think center fire or rime fire makes a difference I think it is just the speed.

I would bet a 220 swift Contender pistol would still work even though it is a hand gun.

Wonder if the one on the right will?
