12/16 Burst?

I have heard of 12/20 bursts but never of a 12/16 burst. I have never had a 16 gauge shotgun so was wondering if this was even possible.

Are you meaning accidentally placing a 16 in a 12 barrel and having it go KABOOM? A 20 WILL lodge in the barrel, a 28 will pass through

Yes, I understand about the 20 and the 28, but could a 16 fire? or will it slip down and jam up the chamber like a 20?

Yes, a 12/20 burst could potentially be fatal or cause serious injury to the shooter. The gun barrel will not survive no matter what as even if it does not explode the over pressure will damage it to the point of it becoming unsafe for use. But it most likely will not survive.

I am thinking a larger 16 GA would stop in the chamber making it impossible to chamber another shell but don't know

oneounce, maybe all new 20's are yellow, but I reloaded, I believe westerns, that were red. Color is never a safe way to tell the gauge.
A 16 gauge in the chamber shouldn't allow a 12 ga. to chamber. but i'm unfamilar with 3 1/2" guns.
I happen to catch the guns & ammo episode when they tried to show the damge caused by the 12/20 burst, in a new super nova, it didn't blow up, just sent the 20 down range.

You're correct, I still have a few old red WW Double-A 20-ga hulls amongst my reloads. However most of them are probably gonna get culled their next time around.

It should be noted: The 12/20 burst potential is such a hazard, some rules prohibit having 20-ga shells with you during 12-ga events.

Looking at dimensional drawings of Chambers and Hulls:
A 16 Gauge hull with a rim at the small end of spec. can get about halfway down a 12 Gauge chamber - not far enough to allow a 12 Gauge shell to chamber and fire, even in a 3 1/2" gun.

I was shooting sporting clays behind a guy with a 16 a few years ago(first summer I shot shotguns). He was older and didn't want to pick up shells, so I guess at the end of each station he would eject the shells and try to catch them and if he didn't he would just leave it on the ground. I was a station behind him and I was ejecting my shells and picking them up. We had the same exact brand/type of shells. I picked up one of his 16s. Next station I loaded and fired it. The hull expanded and stuck, the brass was wrecked, but no damage to the shotgun.
I learned a lesson and bought a lotto ticket.
