1187 Premier from walmart

I recently purchased a Remington 1187 Premier at Walmart for 525.00. They were on clearance and I thought it was a steal. Got it home and gave it a through cleaning and found what I think is rust inside of the barrel. I really cleaned it and I can't tell for 100% sure but I think it is rust. My question is should I return the gun or keep it. Will this little bit of rust, if it turns out to be rust cause any problems with shooting? I'm not sure what to do because it was the last one they had and the rest of the gun is perfect. any advice?
 
Rust or lubricant?

Sometimes the lubricant that is used by Remington on new firearms is a copperish color against black (barrels and metal) and white (cleaning patches) colors.

Take the barrel off the gun and take it to a gun shop you trust. Ask them to take a look at it with a bore scope/bore light. They'll be able to tell you what it is. You may be embarassed if it is lubricant, but you may also be looking at a return if it is rust.

As a HUGE Remington fan...I'll be surprised if it is rust. Keep us updated.
 
True. At my local Walmart, they couldn't even tell if they had any more clays coming in. If you're going to sell the stuff, at least know what's going on. I bought some ammo the other day, and the kid working the counter was covering Automotive, Lawn & Garden, Home Hardware and Paint and the Sporting Goods Dept! Spring is here and in MD, the bass boats are flying up and down the river every morning!!! Staff up!!
 
As mentioned, I would take it to a gunshop first.

Or, call Remington. I'm sure they would take care of it either way; polish it out or replace the bbl.
 
Skip the middle man and go directly to remington. Thats what they're going to do anyway. You may not be able to return something bought on clearance from WM. Not positive. You still got a good deal.
 
You will not be permitted to return any firearm to Wal-mart for any reason. They don't allow ammo returns either as far as I know. In most establishment I think all firearms sales are final. You can send it to a gunsmith or the manufacturer but I don't think you can return it to the store.
 
You got a good deal on the gun. The Wally World here has the same price going. I think $525 is a very good deal indeed.

The rust, if it is rust, won't cause a safety concern. You might want to shoot the gun a few times to see if the deposit or whatever it is gets better or worse. The absolute worst case scenario would have you replacing the barrel. More likely would be polishing with steel wool wrapped around a brass brush and turned with a drill motor.

My 870 Police gave off the same stuff when it was brand new, from inside the barrel, the mag tube, and the receiver. I suspected that it may have been creep from the blue job (not a parked model but Wingmaster blue.) After a few cleanings it stopped leaving that brownish orange color on the patches. It is mirror bright inside all the areas I mentioned.

I would at least give a call to Rem's service department.
 
Thanks for input, just to clear things up, the deposit I noticed was after I cleaned the barrel really good and I did notice the brownish rust colored oil coming out of the barrel. My concern was that the deposits I couldn't get out were rust. I realize the color of the oil looks like rust but it does seem to be rust. I was just wondering if the rust would cause any problems in the perfomance of actual shooting. I guessed it wouldn't but think I will still send it in since a new gun should not have rust inside of the barrel. THANKS FOR ADVICE
 
Of course I can't confirm without seeing it, but it may just be the rust preventative...many mfgs use a corrosion preventative that looks a LOT like rust! I really wish they'd put a dye in it, maybe green or blue, to get rid of this confusion.

Especially with guns that have been sitting in the back for years, this preservative sometimes hardens into really hard crusty deposits. Just soak it in break-free for a few days.

That's not to say I haven't seen brand new guns thoroughly rusted...usually at gun shows with negligent dealers who must store them overnight in aquariums for all I know.
 
Wrap some 0000 steel wool around a bore brush, and chuck up a cleaning rod in a drill. Using the solvent of your choice, run the brush through the barrel with the drill spinning the brush. Dry thoroughly afterwards. If it is just residue, it will come out doing this. If it is rust, you should be able to see a rough spot in the barrel. Recent Remington barrels are not finished very well, by the way. My two newer ones have quite a few tool marks in the barrel, and the forcing cones are a bit rough.

for 525 you got a good deal, and if worse case it was rust and you could not return it "which would make me mad becaus i would blam the rust on WM improper storage" you could pick up a good used barrel and you still would come in cheaper than some stores charge for new ones.
 
I've dealt with Remington Customer Service, call them they might surprise you. I would'nt like rust, it wont hurt and the gun is'nt returnable anyway.
